selecting files from a torrent... part file

This started as a 'wth, how to get the files I want out of this big .dat file' thread. Now it's a 'how can I keep this from happening again' thread. :)

I'm using Fat32 on one of my drives. I didn't think it'd be an issue since all the files are no where near 4gb in size. I'm using 1.4 build 402, with no advanced options changed.. pre-allocate was turned off.

I'm downloading a very large torrent with a ton of files. I selected some of the files to download. Those all downloaded successfully and without any problems. After seeding those selected files for a bit (and here's where things went wrong) I selected more files to download from the torrent. Those files got to 100% and I selected more. Then utorrent gave me an out of disk space error. That's when I noticed those new files I had selected to download were being saved into one big file, which had obviously reached the 3.99gb limit. The partition I'm saving to has about 20gb still free.

After searching here for a bit I went through and skipped then unskipped all the files in the torrent, and ran a recheck of the 16 or so gigs that have been downloaded so far. The part file disappeared and thankfully.. after resetting which files I want to skip and starting the torrent back up, the individual files were created.

All that said, how can I keep this from happening again? This wasn't the best of experiences :(

The workaround solution would be: Upgrade to NTFS. No reason not to, unless you have a really really old and slow HDD.

There were a few bugs with the partfile, Im not sure which version fixed what, so you can try the latest beta versions and hope its already fixed (or report again incase it hasnt).

I don't want a part file at all.

I'm not going to change filesystems when I simply don't need to. There's no reason for several smaller files that are being downloaded to be placed into one large file that can only be used by utorrent. Using a file system without a file size limitation wouldn't have kept this part file from being created.

I understand the reason for the part file in practice.. as a place to store parts of files that I didn't select to download. But these were files that I did select to download.

I just checked my torrent progress.. and I've got a nearly 500mb part file again, and some of the files that I've selected to download after downloading the first set are supposedly 100% downloaded but are still 0 byte files.

the more I look at my files the more worried I am. A good portion of my files that utorrent says are 100% downloaded aren't showing up as the correct file size and the videos aren't all there. For instance.. two 700mb files that utorrent says are 100% done are in reality 324 and 124 mb. These two files were selected to be downloaded from the very beginning. ugh..

A large majority of the files that are supposedly 100% done aren't complete files on the hard-drive.

so I deleted the files that I had downloaded but weren't working, removed the torrent from utorrent and re-added it. I chose which files I wanted to download along with the files I had already (successfully) downloaded in the 'add torrent' dialog, and rechecked the torrent. After that completed I started the torrent back up. That .dat file was created immediately, and it still looks like every bit of data that's being downloaded is going to that file.

When I deleted the files that weren't working and reopened the torrent file utorrent claimed that a large percentage (97% in one case) of those files still existed, even though no .dat file existed until I started downloaded again.

This is a pretty repeatable problem, and I'm not too happy with it, so what can I do to help you fix this so I can get the files I want. At this point I can't even go to use another client since my files seem to be so messed up.
