uT grinds to a halt

daty

Recommended Posts

Everything was fine till about a week ago. No crashing, no internet connection interruption, D: 300 kB/s U: 56 kB/s

Even now, if I only enable/start new torrents with lots of seeders, everything is fine.

But after about 3-5 hours downloading of low seed torrents, it starts with more and more torrents down the queue

even though "Max number of active torrents (upload or download): 4"

The internet connection grinds to a halt, my IMs go offline. Exiting uT does not help, because it stays in Task Manager.

I have to kill the uT process and manually reboot the router for the connection to come up.

As Ultima said http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=368139#p368139

• tested with net.max_halfopen set to 2, 4 and default 8 (current = 2)

• Tried setting µTorrent's affinity to a single core CPU 0 (current = CPU 0, CPU 1)

• Global maximum number of connections: 90 (tried 50, 60)

• UPnP port mapping disabled

• NAT-PMP port mapping disabled

• I have not tried patching TCPIP.sys http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=368139#p368139

uTorrent v1.8.5 (build 17414) on

WinXP SP3 updated to 25-Jan-2010

Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.5002.333 Firewall configured to allow TCP and UDP traffic (both ways) on local port 57608

uTorrent.exe 1.8.5.17414 exempted from SEP Firewall

Internet Service Provider: Etisalat (United Arab Emirates, Middle East)

Connection type: DSL

Modem/Router: Aztech DSL600EU (Texas Instruments chipset) Firmware v3.6.0C-d

Port forwarding successfully implemented (network status green icon on µTorrent's status bar)

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Aztech/DSL600EU/Utorrent.htm

Port Checker tool reports green all the time except the few seconds when uT is launched (which is normal).

uT > options > speed guide > click "Test if port is forwarded properly"

http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=<port number>

Checking port 57608 on 83.110.157.x#x

OK! Port 57608 is open and accepting connections.

You will be able to receive incoming BitTorrent connections.

Here's the list of the non-Microsoft DLLs I spotted under utorrent.exe:

DrvTrNTl.dll

DrvTrNTm.dll Wave sound driver for the Total Recorder (Standard Edition) High Criteria inc. 3.4.0.1

mdnsNSP.dll Bonjour Namespace Provider Apple Inc. 1.0.6.2

nview.dll NVIDIA nView Desktop and Window Manager 111.22 NVIDIA Corporation 6.14.10.11122

PCTLsp.dll PC Tools Layered Service Provider PC Tools Research Pty Ltd. 1.0.101.0

Often, non-Microsoft DLLs are to blame for uTorrent problems.

While I don't know why your sound drivers would even be there...I don't know if that's a problem.

Bonjour should be ok.

Nvidia should be ok.

...But the PC Tools Layered Service Provider seems like something to remove and retest uTorrent.

If that doesn't help...

Did you test uTorrent with DHT, Resolve IPs, uTP, and Teredo disabled?

Extra torrents are started if speeds in running ones are low enough. What's the exact wording of the rules in the firewall? Any port outgoing and your listening port incoming is the appropriate rule.

You have to reboot your router to get the connection working? Does your connection fail faster if you raise the number of connections and run some big torrents like Ubuntu and OpenOffice?

Switeck & GTHK, that was a fast response. Thank you.

I apologize for my slow response, I wanted to test out uT with what you guys advised.

Sadly the same problem recurs.

I have disabled below services

PC Tools Auxiliary Service
PC Tools Security Service
PC Tools ThreatFire
Total Recorder TotRecSched

I have unchecked Resolve IPs in the Peers tab (I don't require flags to be displayed next to the peer)

I never installed IPv6/Teredo support

As for Micro Transport Protocol (uTP)

bt.transp_disposition: 13 (current, default)

Since this option is a bitfield, I presume the below combination is true:

1 allows µTorrent to attempt outgoing TCP connections

4 allows µTorrent to accept incoming TCP connections

8 allows µTorrent to accept incoming uTP connections

i.e. µTorrent is not allowed to attempt outgoing uTP connections.

Do I need to change bt.transp_disposition: 5 or is 13 good enough?

Now, about DHT and PEX:

DHT Network is enabled

DHT for new torrents is enabled

Local Peer Discovery is enabled

Peer Exchange is enabled

I am not sure if disabling DHT will help. As mentioned uT works fantastic with heavily seeded torrents for more than 15 hours.

And I thought uT is geared more towards DHT rather than trackers.

There are no problems with big torrents (~20 GB) as long as there are about 10 seeds or more.

I have never tried Global maximum number of connections beyond 90, since the bandwidth gets correctly maxed out when a properly seeded torrent is active.

The problem starts when there are about 3 or 4 torrents with 1 or 2 seeds each.

And I have to hard reboot my router to get the connection working. (the web interface of the router will not display in the browser when uT freezes the connection)

If you guys think that disabling DHT is the way to go, I will try that.

SEP 11.0.5002.333 Firewall:

Allow <path>\uTorrent.exe Version 1.8.5.17414 traffic on all hosts, all network adapters, all IP protocols, both Traffic directions.
Allow TCP Local <my port number>, Remote <port left blank> traffic for uTorrent.exe Version 1.8.5.17414 on all hosts, all network adapters, TCP protocol, both Traffic directions.
Allow UDP Local <my port number>, Remote <port left blank> traffic for uTorrent.exe Version 1.8.5.17414 on all hosts, all network adapters, UDP protocol, both Traffic directions.

Checking port 57608 on 83.110.157.x#x

OK! Port 57608 is open and accepting connections.

You will be able to receive incoming BitTorrent connections.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't that mean I do not have to tinker around with the firewall and port forwarding?

I apologize if my replies are long and winding, I try to give as much info as possible to avoid multiple round-back posts.

Thank you immensely for you sincere support.

So, the solution is clearly to buy a better router if it's crashing under the load of a single torrent. That's just pathetic. Some routers are just really trashy and not worth the power they suck up.

Even my crap 2Wire can handle more load than that (stuck with it...)

OK, I will replace the router.

I went through http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_chart/Itemid,189/chart,124/

as per http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=58404

Could someone recommend the best ADSL modem and Router for me (budget no limit).

uTorrent Performance is the only criteria. I do not need Wireless, I should be able to disable Wireless if it has.

Should I consider "Maximum Simultaneous Connections" as the main benchmark?

Thank you for your much needed support.

I simply don't know about ADSL modems -- I'm on cable.

There is more than just max connections...though if a router fails to get to 200 on that test, it's already a stinker (with default firmware). A router may fail to properly support UPnP, VPN, or something else...and not be mentioned in the test.
