hofshi
In a private trackers I'm connected to, the peers list describes one of the peers as using BitTorrent/4.1.2, while µtorrent lists him as Fake Bitspirit. Is it possible for µtorrent to completely identify the spoofing client, like the tracker does? The tracker correctly identifies my client as uTorrent/142B(427). Firon
BitSpirit has a clientid spoofing mechanism
Ultima
@hofshi: Eh? Isn't the tracker getting false information then? So why would you want it to identify as the fake ID?
hofshi
just to make sure I got this right, you say that it's not BitTorrent/4.1.2 spoofing itself as a bitspirit client (which is what I thought it was), but the other way around?Edit: Fake Bitspirit implies that it's not really a bitspirit client... hofshi
maybe it should be denoted as "faking bitspirit" instead of "fake bitspirit" then?Fake Bitspirit implies that it's not really a bitspirit client..
Ultima
I don't know... maybe there's a difference between FAKE _clientid_ and [FAKE] _clientid_
hofshi
I see Fake Bitspiritwithout the square brackets.
DreadWingKnight
That's BitSpirit's UDP0 peer ID suffix. It has spoofing that will identify it as other clients who aren't aware of it.
hofshi
Thanks DWK.In that case I think that it would be more appropriate for µtorrent to denote it as "faking bitspirit" instead of the current "fake bitspirit" which implies that it's not really a bitspirit client. Switeck
Fake BitSpiritsounds like a different meaning thanBitSpirit FakeThe 1st sounds like BitSpirit may be trying to fake something else, the 2nd sounds like something unknown is trying to fake BitSpirit. But that's just me... Vectorferret
Easiest is probably BitSpirit Faking
hofshi
Vectorferret: yes, yours is a better suggestion.
splintax
Hmm, this never really bothered me, but I do see your point.IMO it should always say [FAKE] $client, where $client is the name of the client being spoofed. This would ensure uniformity, since you can't always tell what the real client is.
Vectorferret
I like that way.
avatarl
Shouldn't ìTorrent be banning all [FAKE] clients?

hofshi
what good would it do to ban all fake clients? sometimes they are seeding, you know...
1c3d0g
Keyword being sometimes...almost all the time they're stupid little leechers. :/
hofshi
that doesn't sound like solid ground for an all out ban.at least IMO.

Ultima
Er, running offtopic... to a discussion that has ended a while ago -- µTorrent won't discriminate for you.
avatarl
Why not? What's the reason to use client ID spoofing if you're not doing anything suspicious to the swarm or the tracker? It's common sense.
hofshi
it's not that common, and it's good that it isn't.
