Win7 - uTorrent 2.0 nearly freezes system up

Hey guys

I've updated uTorrent to the newest version (2.0 build 18296) and experiencing a weird problem now.

Whenever I start utorrent, the system nearly freezes up after 5 minutes. That means running sound falls into annoying loop, screen freezes up, all input devices freeze up (including not being able to use num-lock). This complete freeze holds on for a minute or so and then I'm able to move the mouse a little bit. This gets better and better after some additional time until the freeze resolves and the system begins to behave normally, only to freeze up again after 30 seconds.

This can be resolved instantly by closing utorrent (as soon as I'm able to).

Also, after the system comes out of freeze, my instant-messenger gets disconnected.

First thing I did was to look for new drivers for my Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Ethernet card - I'm now using version 11.24.3.3

Then I installed Antivir to check for viruses - nothing was found.

I also took my download-folders off the Indexing services and paused it, which did not resolve anything.

I am not running any Firewall software (Except built in Windows firewall)

I'm running basically standard-settings for utorrent (so no webui or other fancy stuff - just normal download/upload rate adjustments)

UPDATE:

I now also shut down DT and AltDrag.exe - problem still persists.

I also found out that during a freeze, utorrent opens 3 "index.dat" handlers (one of them is C:\Users\****\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\index.dat). I disabled RSS-update now; maybe it has something to do with this.

UPDATE 2:

I've now seen using Process Explorer, that during a freeze "Interrupts" is causing 100% CPU on one of the cores - but still a total of only 50% overall. Oddly enough this is sufficient to freeze the whole system.

I'm back to looking at drivers.

Have you updated all your chipset drivers and everything else? Perhaps try removing Avira. High interrupts only happen in kernel space, which usually means drivers (or services like firewalls) doing weird things.

Hey Firon - thanks for your reply

I've been trying to update all my systems drivers for the last 3 hours and apparently there are no new drivers that I can install (for the chipset that is). The driver setups runs though without errors, doesn't change anything though as far as I can see (up to Intel® ICH8 Family SMBus Controller - 283E for which I found a newer driver).

I have a GA-965G-ds3 rev 1.0 mainboard

I also de-installed the virus scanner again - no success, still.

From driver manager you can choose to "update driver", then pick wherever the setups extracted to. If that doesn't work then what you have might be latest, or at least Windows thinks so (assuming you have it search for the best while giving it a path to look in, using the "I will specify" will force a driver in. If you do that, be prepared for implosion).

Have absolutely the same problem as failbot.

Situation in here:

Was using Windows 7 Beta (x64) till the last week. 1.x and 2.0 versions of uTorrent were working perfectly. Had 1.1k .torrent files in the queue, 300 half-open limit, 1.5k total allowed connections, seeding 2+ MB/s, and still able to surf the web easily. Working as intended.

Then moved to 7600 (release ver) build of Win. Installed all the hotfixed offered by Windows Update, disables firewall and UAC. Fail. As soon as i startup uTorrent in there my total connection speed drops to 1.1 MB/s (upload+DOWNLOAD, WTF?), can even normally open a single page in the browser. After arond 1 hour (more or less) get network disconnect. (annoys still, especially when on Skype, in L4D2) Said: "F*ck it". Installed another instance of Windows.

Currently have no updates installed by Windows Update, firewall still enabled, etc. (as clear as possible) Fail #2. In around 5-30 (sometimes more) seconds after running uTorrent my windows hangs. Totally, including sound (loop) and mouse.

Now living with Vuze (OMFG). Running more than zero programms written in Java gives me a butthurt.

@ Manalishi How about if you give your system specs not all problems are related to the software but also the O/S as well and hardware drivers not being updated correctly. I use 7x64 all updates as of march and Ut 2.0 1.8xx I think or the latest and have no problems as your relating to I would say you should follow some of the trouble shooting on one of the MOD signature and see what happening on your system.

Doubt there's a problem with hardware.

What i've got: Phenom X4, 4Gb DDR2, 3(sata)+1(usb) drives (500+500+1500+400).

Ethernet adaptor: some kind of 10/100/1000 built in Atheros (Realtek's). Tried both M$'s and Realtek's drivers.

OS version already given (for slowpokes: Windows 7 x64).

About "trouble shooting" guides... can't find here something NOT about firewalls/routers. Currently using none of them.

P.S. It would've been great if someone shared 1.8.4 (rumored to be most stable ever) / latest 1.x build of uTorrent.

Thanks for the tip, Firon - I checked the event log and turned out had some messages about RAID. I looked for new drivers for my RAID system and turned out there were some (funny how I overlooked this the first time - I feel fucking stupid now).

Installed now and I'm running utorrent now for the last hour without problems.

I have the lock-up problem with utorrent 2.0 (also 2.0.1 beta) too on Win 7 x64. I don't have any RAID setup, event viewer does not show anything utorrent related. Just about 30 seconds after starting the application, the gui just freezes for a couple of minutes and after that it starts to work normally. I never had any problems with previous versions of utorrent so maybe it is related to some new features added to 2.0, I really don't know :(

edit: the lock-up affects the utorrent only, it does not freeze or slow down the whole system. In fact, utorrent shows 0% CPU utilization when the lock-up occurs.

After "unfreezing" the lock-up will occur again everytime i start to click anything in the gui
