uTorrent Processes not Closing

I am having a persistent issue with uTorrent. When I updated to the new version I've been having a problem where upon closing uTorrent the process stays up in the task manager. When I try to end the process, I get an error and the process stays up. So if I close and re-open uTorrent (which I do frequently so I can reclaim my bandwidth during the day) I end up with a large number of uTorrent processes eating up resources. The only solution I've found is rebooting.

I tried running Falcon as well and that just made it worse, that version is Singleton so I can't re-open uTorrent once I close it.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Issue occurs on the latest stable build.

Strange, after moving and re-setting up my computer I can't replicate the issue. It was consistently failing before for several days, even after several reboots.

I had searched the troubleshooting thread first, but this is the closest to my problem... this only started happening after last update.

First I notice that in the µTorrent window, both up and down speeds have dropped to virtually nothing.

I stop torrents, exit µTorrent, but taskmgr shows µTorrent still running. I can't kill process in taskmgr.

I have a hijackthis log (nothing looks out of the ordinary to me).

Using process explorer (renamed ieexplore), I see the µTorrent process but I can't get anything to show in the dll window (ctrl+d doesn't work and the dropdown menu is greyed out). double clicking does get some thread info and the tcp/ip tab shows several legacy(?) connections.

*EDIT: after intital posting, i found that i COULD get the dll window info... posting below.

This is XPsp3 btw.

Next step will be to do an inplace reinstall of µTorrent.

Did you try to disable PeerBlock when µT is running?

Honestly PB with too large blocklists is useless and can interfer with your p2p traffic, just use ipfilter.dat in µT (at least temporarily during the test).

And these 2 Nvidia processes are injected into µT:

thanks moogly, I will try that.

to be honest, there can be several culprits. I had to revert to an older version of PB due to crashes. I've had recent problems with explorer itself. I've had sectors on the raid (0) array go bad (fixed by checkdsk -r). I've had problems using the latest Opera beta ... and so on.

This installation of XP is the longest, and generally stable OS i've ever had and I believe its time has come for a clean install (or upgrade).

I only thought that this behavior of µT on the heels of an upgrade ought to be troubleshooted.

I tried the beta 2.0.1 which exhibited the same behavior. I then reinstalled/started the executable of a previous version still in the install folder (version 2 build 18488) and no problems yet. I'll report back after further testing. thanks again.

hello, i have exactly the same problem, when I close the program and later (even hours later) I start it again, I got an error that utorrent is already running and when I check the task manager its there...but I'm unable to kill the process. When I logout and then login again, I can run utorrent but still there are 2 utorrent processes...only restarting of computer solves it.

OS: windows 7 professional 32bit

I erased everything Utorrent referenced off the drive and installed the latest alpha and it's working as normal again. Have a feeling it was something to do with installing over an old version.

I'm not sure if this is related, but I noticed in process explorer that (sometimes not always) µTorrent is nested within the Opera browser executable. When I open µTorrent properties>TCP/IP tab there is an Opera related connection.

For the time being, I've changed the way torrents are handled in Opera and now download torrent files and execute them outside of Opera. I've also disabled Opera's fraud protection which connects to their servers to check addresses etc.

I'm getting the same issue, too. It started with version 2.0 alpha. 1.8 was OK.

When I exit uTorrent program, its process remain in memory as an undead.

I am using Win7 x64 too.

I'm seeing the exact same issues as Chemarim: transfer speeds drop to single digits, so I close uTorrent in order to restart it, but the process keeps right on running no matter what I do to close/kill it. This has happened 4-5 times since I've been running the beta client, and each time, after I see that the process will not die, I attempt to reboot, but it hangs during shutdown and I have to hold in the power button to get it to shut down. When it comes back up, everything appears to be fine.

I had been running 2.0.1 build 18284 and build 18723, but I just upgraded tonight to build 18786 and haven't seen the issue yet. The machine runs Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 (it's my file server).

I have very little else installed on this server. No Opera, no PeerBlock, no nVidia drivers.

Getting the same issue starting from 2.0 version - 9 times out of 10 uTorrent stays in the process list after closing it.

It is not possible to kill the process or to launch another copy of uTorrent until system reboot. Left to itself the process is staying in memory for hours.

I've tried to install 2.0.1.18786 beta version but the problem is still there.

Running Windows 7 with little to none additional software installed.

For those of you who can't kill µTorrent, we're fairly certain this is an OS bug. However, a full dump of utorrent.exe is not good enough to investigate further. The dump of uTorrent's memory points to a problem in the kernel. Unfortunately, we need a complete system dump for further debugging of this issue.

Here is a registry file with most of these settings done for you. You only need to change the pagefile size as described in Step 3. Download the .reg file, open it and hit "Yes" when Windows asks to import it.

(1) In Control Panel / System / Advanced system settings / Startup and Recovery / System failure, check Write an event to the system log; uncheck Automatically restart. In Write debugging information, choose Kernel memory dump (or Complete memory dump), specify dump file %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP, and check Overwrite. These choices appear to set values in registry key

(3) In Control Panel / System / Advanced system settings / Performance / Advanced / Virtual Memory / Change, choose Custom size, and specify an Initial size that is at least 1 MB bigger than the size of physical memory. So if you have 4GB of memory, make this size 4097.

Reboot after making all these changes.

To generate a dump, hold down the right-side Ctrl key while pressing Scroll Lock twice in rapid succession. The OS should BSOD and take a dump. Wait for the dump to be 100% complete, then restart the PC. The OS knows that a crash occurred and will ask you to consider alternate boot modes. Choose "Start Windows normally". Upon completion of the reboot, the OS will report the prior unexpected shutdown and will offer to check online for a solution. Click Cancel. Look for C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP, with a recent timestamp and a size close to that of physical memory. You may need elevated privileges to access the file. Please compress it before sending it to us.

After you have set up your PC to generate the dump and rebooted, make sure that utorrent.exe is closed and hung in an unkillable state. At that point you should then hold Ctrl and press Scroll Lock twice to generate the dump.

Open as few applications as possible. This way the dump will compress better.

You will need to compress the dump with WinRAR or 7-zip. If you can, split it up into chunks slightly smaller than 1 gigabyte (so like 1000 megabytes).

At this point, because of the size of the dumps, there are only a few options for uploading the files. You can upload each chunk to http://www.transferbigfiles.com/ (1GB max per file), then email all the relevant links to firon at bittorrent.com.

Alternatively, we can setup a temporary FTP server for you guys to upload the dumps to. Let me know if you prefer the FTP method and I can email you the credentials. Don't worry, other users won't be able to download your dump files.

This is the only way to help solve the bug, so we will really appreciate the help.

To go back to the default crash settings after generating a dump, I have provided another registry file. http://download.utorrent.com/defaultdumpsettings.reg

Download it, open it, and hit Yes when Windows asks if you'd like to import it.

RAR's? Don't you have to pay money or be nagged to death to use that software? I prefer good ol' 7zip or tar.lzma.

Psh, it barely nags. :P 7-zip has a hideous interface, though it'll be fine too.

You can sorta torrent it, but it's not that convenient for a 1-1 transfer imho.

If you can reproduce it, please try to do the steps mentioned before. We can't get it fixed until someone does, since no one here at BT can actually reproduce it.
