All versions of uTorrent crashing router.

I've looked everywhere for solutions, but all of them are over a year old and none of them worked for me anyways.

Here's the problem: I can start uTorrent just fine and it runs at pretty good speeds for about 5-10 minutes before it crashes the router forcing me to power cycle. I was running uTorrent fine on my last laptop a few weeks ago with the same router, so I can only imagine that it has something to do with either the new build or, more likely, my new laptop.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit btw, that may be part of the problem?

Any recommendations out there?

This is same issue I'm having. I've tried limited connections, opening up the router full to allow everything. Still does it. I'm trying with Bit Torrent program instead tonite to see if still has the same issue...and hard wiring computer to router with utorrent as well.

The world changed a few weeks ago when TPB stopped its tracker. This certainly knocked out my uTorrent. It may or may not have affected yours. What solved my problem in the end was to disable DHT. I do not understand the DHT module in uTorrent but my firewall was at some point reporting north of 300 connections - when I only had 90 configured. Residential routers don't like this kind of abuse...

I've tried disabling DHT, dropping the number of connections, lowering half-connections, resetting router completely, reinstalling utorrent, even tried out bittorrent and the same thing happened.

Just noticed something else. If I catch it as it starts crashing (it doesn't go out all at once) and disconnect my laptop from the network, I can close out the torrent engine and restart my wifi connection. If I wait for it to crash I have to power cycle the router. Don't know if this tells anybody anything, but I hope it does.

I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router and I'm using firmware v1.01.1

My ISP is Comcast cable and the tests came back spotless.

I've set my net.max_halfopen to 4 on the advice of another post. It crashed at both 100 and at 4.

peer.lazy_bitfield is on

I've turned bt.tcp_rate_control to false

disabled DHT, UPnP, NAT-PMP

My connections are set to 50 and I've capped download and upload at 100 and 50 respectively

I get the green checkmark while the torrent works.

I'm running windows 7 64 bit home premium on a dell/alienware M15X with an i7 M 620 processor

I have 4g ram

I have AVG for virus scan, but I've tried running utorrent (and bit torrent) with AVG installed and uninstalled with no difference in results.

You can't use stock firmware on a WRT54G. The stock firmware is terrible. If it's an older one, you can try switching to Tomato, else you'll have to run DD-WRT.

Search/file/media indexers can cause both uTorrent and your computer fits...so hopefully these have been configured so they don't constantly rescan uTorrent's downloading torrents:

In uTorrent, did you also disable Resolve IPs and uTP?

And did you lastly try disabling Teredo/IPv6?

Your router is probably one of the failed sub-versions of wrt54g.

...So to get any use out of it at all with uTorrent running will require disabling many of uTorrent's features.

My v2 behaved admirably, even when faced with YouTube settings.

Tomato if you have v1-v4 (check for a version number under the router or use Wikipedia), DD-WRT if you have one of the crap models that support it, new router if you have a full on garbage model.

The reason I'm hesitant to blame it on the router is because I have had this same router for 6 years and I have used utorrent on 4 different computers while using this router with zero problems. I've disabled Teredo/IPv6 and I'm gonna try it again.

Interestingly enough, I cannot find "resolve IP" on the new (non-beta) version of utorrent. I can't find it anywhere in prefrences and when I right-click the peers tab nothing shows up. Anyone have any ideas?

Right-click in the peers window/tab of an active torrent to get the menu that Resolve IPs is on.

Well it seems that removing the Teredo/IPv6 did the trick. Several very large files later and I'm not having any problems at all.
