Yeah, well every ISP has there bad side. Right now there is something very wrong with mine when im downloading something my connection just stops, so I have to hit stop then resume for it to start again. I have to do this like 4 times to complete the download. It been really slow lately I heep having to hot "go" to acually get to a webpage. Im upgrading my internet from 1.5M top speed to 3.0M top speed, hopefully this helps.

Your problem sounds more like a router issue... mine was the same as well, until I realized that my connection table was saturated, so I disabled DHT, and voilà, internet connection all good to go, with 300+ connections to spare out of 512 (on a network with about 6 computers, 3 of which use BitTorrent).

kewldude606 - i was like you too. eventually they'll bother you as well. i was uploading for about two years like that before they bothered me, so it takes them a while. now i have to be careful because they're probably watching me.

On the discussion forum of a tracker where I'm a moderator, we just had a post from an Azureus user talking about the resources freed up by disabling DHT in the client. Of course, with Azureus you need that far worse than with µTorrent!

Even so, I've been telling our users, no need to disable DHT in µTorrent, keep it on for torrents where it's allowed and where it helps, µTorrent won't use it for our torrents anyway (because of the private=1 infodict key). But if there are resource consumption issues and the person isn't on any torrents where DHT helps, turning it off in the client is a good idea.

I only suggest turning it off if a) you have a REALLY slow connection (and you're not using DHT). like, 96kbit and lower or B) your modem/router chokes on it

The difference is that it won't use it for that particular torrent. DHT itself (as in, your connection to the DHT network and any related activity) is still running.

And yet, there are some members-only trackers that require passkeyed announce URLs but do not use the private flag; go figure. All they need is a couple peers on each torrent passing the metafile around to non-members and so much for being members-only, especially with peer exchange going on as well.
