zedd5 Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 Hi,I got a 100mbit connection and my connection settings in utorrent set fairly low. Lower then the conservative suggestion. Utorrent seems to be running fine for extended time and not lagging my system or anything but I dont get good speeds. At about 5MB/s download even with no upload and just 1 or 2 torrents active utorrent will slow back down and display Disk Overloaded. It can peak up to about 9MB/s but drops down cause of disk overload.I have tested the disk with Bart's Stuff Test v5 in my download folder. Speeds are not great cause it is a TrueCrypt volume but I still get 30MB/s write speeds (random) and about 40MB/s read speed. Much higher then the 4-5mb/s download speed utorrent settles down around.
Switeck Posted April 4, 2010 Report Posted April 4, 2010 If it says it's getting Disk Overload, what settings do you have under uTorrent's Disk Cache? (preferences, advanced, disk cache)
zedd5 Posted April 4, 2010 Author Report Posted April 4, 2010 Everything is checked except the following 3 options:-Override automatic cache size and specify manually-Increase automatic cache size when cache thrashing-Disable windows caching of disk reads
alfeo Posted April 4, 2010 Report Posted April 4, 2010 You could try manually setting your cache size to a high value. It depends on your amount of memory, but I set it to 500MB and it solved the problem for me. You could try playing with that, see if it solves anything.
zedd5 Posted April 4, 2010 Author Report Posted April 4, 2010 Yeah setting override to a high number seems to work.I can't run it like that though ... is there something else I can try or will I have to turn on and off override cache size manually every time I download something to get max speeds?Or does it still reduce cache size when it is just seeding if the box below is clicked?
alfeo Posted April 4, 2010 Report Posted April 4, 2010 Do problems just occur when you're downloading at high speeds or also when just uploading without DL? And, when you're downloading, are you uploading at the same time? The question is whether your disk can't handle the reads, the writes or a combination of the two. I think that if the problem is writes, the only thing you can do is to increase cache size, but I'm not sure about that. You can check at the speed tab; look at the disk statistics. If your write cache is (almost) full and your disk is doing a lot of writes, you need a bigger cache.
Switeck Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Uncheck the 2nd option "reduce memory usage..." under disk cache.Uncheck "remove old blocks from cache".Check "Increase automatic cache size when cache thrashing".
zedd5 Posted April 5, 2010 Author Report Posted April 5, 2010 Thanks Switeck.I still get disk overloaded with those settings though. But at almost double the down speeds of before. Now disk overloaded appears at around 8mb/s.Setting override automatic cache size to 100mb (and keeping the reduce when not needed checked) seems to remove the disk overload and give me 10-11mb/s consistently. So is this solution ok? I don't have too much memory just 2gb...but with these settings (the changes you mentioned minus altering reduce and adding the override) utorrent seems to settle in at about 40meg when just seeding and only go up to 100mb when downloading. Which is perfectly ok memory hogging by me...
niks2025 Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 hiello m a regular user for utorrent but m everyday suffer low speed download problem my modem speed is 256kbps so how i improve the downloding speed plz tell me a solution this problem ........ thank you........

Switeck Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 zedd5, yes it's probably a wise idea to allow uTorrent to use 100 MB ram for disk cache instead of the default of 32 MB ram.
John Peterson Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 You could try manually setting your cache size to a high value. It depends on your amount of memory, but I set it to 500MB and it solved the problem for me.I set it to 2 GB but I sometimes hit that limit. So I increased it to 3 GB. But then RAM usage would be stuck at around 45 MB like disk caching was completely disabled. Why? Can you make a 64-bit build so I can use more RAM since I hit the 2 GB limit?
