visual Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Hi All,Ive resisted posting in this forum until now, but Ive finally given up. Ive been tweaking my PC and UTorrent for about two weeks with very little success. I followed the great Mini-Guide step-by-step and it hasnt resulted in any increase in speeds. Ive disabled everything (firewall, anti-virus, etc). No luck. Heres my current story:* ADSL with 1.5 MB downlink & 128 Kb uplink. * UTorrent 1.4.2 Beta Build 431* Windows XP SP2*Windows Firewall is Disabled (Ive previously played around with several other Firewalls and opened ports accordingly with no luck)*No router being used. * Kaspersky 05 Personal Pro Anti Virus is now running (though I also tried disabling it at one point with no change in performance)Two additional notes: * The OO "test" torrent is currently downloading at LESS than 2 kb per second. * I ran the Port Probe at https://www.grc.com/x/portprobe=portnumber and it says that Port 0 is CLOSED. Does this mean that my ISP is blocking all torrent traffic? What do you guys recommend I do?
1c3d0g Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Try forwarding another port? :| Until you find one that works...1720, 80, 21, 110, or (God forbid) 25. :/Edit: and also turn on Encryption. When µTorrent goes stable, a lot of people will upgrade so you'll get a better chance of finding someone who can communicate with encryption. Azureus 2400 and up can already do this.
visual Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 Hi, I tried all the ports you mentioned and theyre all closed. (even 25). Am I doing something wrong? Edited to add: The Port currently being used by UTorrent is open. What does this mean?
visual Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 Also, Encryption is already on. No luck.
1c3d0g Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 What do you mean? Which port is µTorrent using that reports as open? If that port is open, then use it! You should also see Network OK on the status bar, if this is the case.
visual Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 Haha Ok, let me restate. The Port that Im using for UTorrent now is OPEN. Still, the download speeds are absymal.
1c3d0g Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 So you have Network OK? And the slow speeds could be due to the swarm itself. What's the availability? :|
visual Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 First off, thanks for all the help. :cool:1) Network is completely ok. 2) The OO Torrent has 12 seeds, 0 Lurchers. It was running at 2-5 kb. I just stopped it after three hours.3) Ive also been downloading a Lost TV episode with 10 Seeds and 10 Lurchers - its been going around 2-3 kb d/l and 5-6 u/l. But in general, even when Im downloading (seemingly) perfectly healthy torrents (im talking 50 seeds + 50 Lurchers), my download speeds are generally in the 4-5 kb range. Frankly, Im at a loss for what to do. Im not expecting 100 Kbps, but I should be able to hit double digits on a healthy swarm, right?
1c3d0g Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 You should be hitting the high teens and early twenties in a good swarm. :/ Assuming you've followed the Speed Guide (either mine or µTorrent's built-in one), I'm at a loss as to your slow speeds...something is bottle-necking your connection, but I have no idea what it could be.
1c3d0g Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 What ISP are you on? 'Cause personally, eliminating all other errors (slow hard disk, incorrect network settings, user error etc.), it looks like throttling to me. Can't say much more than that. :/
visual Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 I will ask around and check with my ISP to see if they are throttling. I'll keep you updated if I learn anything else. Im going to solve this thing one way or another. :cool:Thanks again for your help. I may bump this thread in a day or two. I hope your around to chat again
Firon Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 I'm pretty sure Barak throttles anything that uses a lot of connections, so PE can't help.Get a new ISP. Try searching, there's a few people (hofshi) that had similar issues
visual Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 OK, thanks Firon. Where is Hofshi? Id love to speak with him about this....BTW (dumb question coming), how did ya know my ISP?
Firon Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Admins can see other people's IPs. He's on the forums here.. try searching for his posts about Barak.
1c3d0g Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Ahhh...you're on Barak. Good luck with that. Hofshi and I extensively tested a torrent with that ISP...frankly I don't know what to think anymore. They claim they don't throttle, yet it's clear (to me at least) that they're doing something that's hurting P2P traffic. :/
visual Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 Weve been talking about switching internet providers for some time now. Guess its time to go play the market and see what I come up with.....I had no idea that it was the ISP all this time that was slowing down my downloads.
