atarifan Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 i have this really odd issue. something that i have not seen in any other forum posts. i am using a net meter to watch the amount of data flow and i noticed that even though my utorrent was dling at a total of maybe 20 kbps and my upload sucks in the first place the net meter showed my rates to be topping out. i am on an at&t dsl line. the thing that get's me is: why? why is my overall communications topping off when my actual download and upload speeds remain at an all time low? and this only happens when i run my torrent client. i do have two firewalls but they are both configured to allow utorrent to pass and i am on a NETGEAR router, wired direclty thru LAN ethernet, everything is forwarded properly, no problems with the SPI layer. i got plenty of seeders and leachers so no issues there. i.p. blocklist is installed and updated as of this morning. it just seems like there is a LOT more data flowing than there should be. if i'm not mistaken my net meter should be registering just over (for the most part) what my utorrent is sending and recieving because of other applications that use the same gateway. (i.e. my antivirus, web browser, ect., ect. and i am watching for anything else that might look suspicious.) there are two more computers hooked up to the router wirelessly but they are usually not communicating with the router at the same time i am using utorrent so i don't hog the bandwidth while they are on. when looking at my router log i find a TON of DOS (SYN) and DOS (ACK) attacks. now i don't know if that is because of some kind of multicasting that vista does or is my connection being flooded with fake data because of utorrent being activated. how do you shut down multicasting if that is the problem? does at&t throttle even though they say they don't? they passed the glasnost test. another question i have is: is there a program that is installed from a remote location that monitors and reports to the anti-p2p agencies while i run a torrent client? if so what can i use to detect it and get rid of it? i also have another program that watches my connections and when i turn on the client all of a sudden my log goes NUTS. is flooding my data line a way to throttle and how do i counter that? i already have the protocol encryption set to "forced" and i have been reading a lot about thwarting throttling and have been changing my settings to attempt to increase my speeds. no joy on that one. i am increasingly frustrated with this problem. at this point i see little actual progress in my torrents, but my network meter goes nuts (and i have used more than one, at the same time even, with the same results) when it is activated, showing a lot more data flowing then there should be and may possibly be directly related to how slow things are going in the first place.ANY HELP WOULD BE HOT.THANKSbtw i have only one torrent running at this time and have for a while now. i also would like to know if i can, and if so, how to upload a screenshot. another issue i have seen is i have found torrents with 800 or more seeders and they fly like they should and some with about 300 or less that should be and don't. what's the deal? if anyone has any explanations i would be very grateful.
Switeck Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Give me some numbers...What's uTorrent say its speeds are and what's the net meter saying?
atarifan Posted June 30, 2010 Author Report Posted June 30, 2010 right now at 10 :15 A.M. my utorrent's dl is around 40 and my ul is at about 20. the net meter reads wild fluctuations in down and up, ranging from 250 down to 600 down, and 240 up to 400 up. i do have a screen shot if i could upload it, with both running at the same time. just not sure how, though, with the format of this website. i'm pretty sure that my D/U rate on this dsl line tops off at 700 kbps down/300 kbps up.------------------------- General Traffic Summary-------------------------All Connections [06/29/2010 --- 06/30/2010]--------------------------------------------------------------- Downloaded Uploaded Both--------------------------------------------------------------- Today: 1.81 GB 1.25 GB 3.06 GB This Week: 2.38 GB 2.06 GB 4.44 GB This Month: 2.38 GB 2.06 GB 4.44 GB This Year: 2.38 GB 2.06 GB 4.44 GB Last 30 Days: 2.38 GB 2.06 GB 4.44 GB--------------------------------------------------------------- Total: 2.38 GB 2.06 GB 4.44 GB---------------------------------------------------------------The report was generated by Net Meter http://www.hootech.com/NetMeter/this was generated over the past 24 hours. i think i dled probably about 900 megs the entire night. two files about 350 megs a piece set high and normal and the rest to low. utorrent autostarted at two in the morn and i didn't see it till about nine.any other information you would like?
Switeck Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 For SCREENSHOTS, use: http://www.imageshack.us/...Then post a link to them in your message.uTorrent shows stats at the bottom of its window about how much it's downloaded/uploaded since last restart. This will let you get closer to what it's really doing.Seems like you're confusing bits for BYTES.uTorrent's speeds are in KiloBYTES/second, but it won't estimate overheads unless you're running v2.0 or later. (I suggest v2.0.2 or v2.0.3 beta.)
atarifan Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 http://img155.imageshack.us/content_round.php?page=done&l=img155/5718/actual.jpg&via=muploadhere is the link to the pic. i took this just before i loaded it up. notice that i am using two different network meters. one in the top right and the one down front. now yes, you were correct about me not knowing the difference between kbps and kb/s. i found a calculator and did some looking up "what equals what". http://www.testmy.net/tools/convert.phpthings still didn't add up. the only two things that i had open were my browser and utorrent. and i was not streaming anything. my AV was telling me i needed to restart so it wasn't calling out. the only time this happens is when utorrent is running. i'm confused.
Switeck Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 I can't clearly make out the graph because the JPG "smears" and removes faint details. But from what I can tell, you've got rather high overloads for both down and up according to uTorrent! What uTorrent settings are you using, as shown by Speed Guide (CTRL+G) and any advanced ones you changed (* next to the changed ones)?
