Ramses505 Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Using Windows 7 - Windows XP and Windows 2000 ProuTorrent v1.8.3 (I have to use this version as others are banned on the sites I use)I have read a lot of advice about how to make this work but I cannot get it working ! Sorry.I read that uTorrent will read the configuration files located in the folder it is installed in 'first' but this does not seem to work for me. I install to F:\Downloads - I then copy all my existing files from the %Appdata% folder to the F:\Downloads folder but uTorrent carries on updating and using the files within the %Appdata% folder. If I delete the files in the %Appdata% folder, uTorrent thinks it needs to be reinstalled again.I have tried this with a fresh install and by simply cutting and pasting the files on an existing install - it simply recreates the files in the %Appdata% folder. If anyone can help with this it would save em a lot of grief - we ghost our machines regularly here and drive C is not somewhere that anything important or persistent can be kept. Thanks for the helpRegards
DreadWingKnight Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Where is the utorrent.exe file through all of this?
Ramses505 Posted June 30, 2010 Author Report Posted June 30, 2010 Thanks for the reply Dread. The working uTorrent.exe is in the F:\Downloads folder where I installed in the first place AND where I installed when I tried the 'fresh' installation method.I read through some exchanges you had with another user which is what prompted me to try in the first instance. The 'support files' (settings.dat, resume.dat, utorrent, chm etc) are those that used to reside on my C:\ drive within the %Appdata% (etc) folder. I tried moving these in the case of the existing installation - and I backed them up then restored them to the F:\Downloads folder in the case of the fresh installation method. Both times a new group of files are created in the %Appdata% folder.I note from the file date and timestamps that those in the F:\Downloads folder that the files are not being used there. It would seem a really good idea where many of us run multiple operating systems and some of us who regularly overwrite our boot drives that we can choose where to have config files, especially with a piece of software that does not really install in the conventional manner.Any further ideas or info would be really welcome. Thanks
DreadWingKnight Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 settings.dat is the trigger file. If it's not present when uTorrent starts up (checking the utorrent.exe location first, then %appdata%\utorrent) it gets created in %appdata%\utorrentThe logger reflects when this actually works.1.8.3 is not supported because of bugs and other issues. If the problem persists with 2.0.2, then we can continue.
