UnDeadChicken Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 When I try to download a torrent, I'm getting an "Error: Access Denied" message. After looking around, I've found out that this happens when a program other than uTorrent wants access to the files and this conflict provides the error. However, I have no idea how to isolate exactly which program is doing this and thus I can't remove it. Any ideas on how?
paintball9 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Its probably in regards to permissions for the spot you're trying to download the files to. Possibly an external hd or a folder somewhere. If you're using a mac then make sure the hd is not formatted as ntfs (it will be read only if it is)
UnDeadChicken Posted July 18, 2010 Author Report Posted July 18, 2010 I've heard that as well; people changed where the directory for their downloads is and having success. On a Dell laptop running Window's Vista btw. I've tried changing the directory to my desktop and numerous other places and am not having any success.
paintball9 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Try running uTorrent as administrator (right click and second option down)
moogly Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Are you running as admin on your computer or as limited user?
UnDeadChicken Posted July 18, 2010 Author Report Posted July 18, 2010 Running as the only user on my laptop (so as admin).
DreadWingKnight Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 If you're running on vista or 7, running as the only user on the machine is NOT the same as running as admin.Verify the security properties on the individual files and folders where you're saving to that are giving you this error. Your user name MUST have full control to prevent this error.
UnDeadChicken Posted July 18, 2010 Author Report Posted July 18, 2010 Sorry if I was ambiguous there. I can confirm that I'm admin. As I said, I think it's a matter of isolating which program/s are interfering with uTorrent. I remember there was a thread with a problem like mine that the posters were able to (going from a log OP provider) deduce the likely programs that he needed to remove. I'm trying to find it atm but does this ring any bells for anyone?EDIT:OK I've just managed to find it. paintball9 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Well your first problem is that you have both mcaffe and norton installed. Both are pretty bad at what they do, and combined they can do a lot of damage especially in the permissions area. Definitely get rid of one, I suggest both. and get something that you can actually use without running into problems ever 2 minutes.
UnDeadChicken Posted July 18, 2010 Author Report Posted July 18, 2010 Hmm I didn't even realize that I had Norton and I didn't think that Macafee was bad security software to have. I'm very happy with paying to keep my laptop secure so what software would you recommend? Would something as easy as AVG be good?Secondly, I have Macafee (don't know about Norton) on my computer with pretty much the same restrictions and in the same since I've had my laptop (easily a few years minimum) so I don't know if that could be it (been using uTorrent for ages as well). I'll try removing Norton and see how I go though.
GTHK Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 I don't see any Norton at first glance, but it has been known to leave left overs so use this.
paintball9 Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 Nm, I thought it was, should have looked closer you were right, I saw the synaptic (touchpad) and thought I saw symantec. As far as mcafee goes, i've never liked it but I can't guarantee its what is causing the problems. Personally I would say avg is better but I think in this case is more down to your opinion. I'd at least try disabling it for a bit and see if the problem goes away.
UnDeadChicken Posted July 19, 2010 Author Report Posted July 19, 2010 OK an update on it so far. I have just completely disabled Macafee - all parts of it shutdown. At the moment, I am still having half of the problem.I should also mention that whenever I close uTorrent, I am getting a pop-up box that states "Unable to save the resume file, or the disk is full. Another program might have the file open or the disk is full" then goes on to say retry/cancel/etc. When I re-open uTorrent (after getting the message) it is in exactly the same state as before. What I mean by this is that if I had, for example, removed torrents in uTorrent before I closed it - when I re-opened it those torrents would still be there. This is the same for everything, settings included. It is even saying that my downloads are staying at a certain %value/downloaded value (after I re-open it) when I have managed to download a little bit and there should be a clear change in these values (this sometimes happens; I manage to get the download going for a little bit before I get the error message). On the plus-side I have been running a torrent for about 15mins and so far I am not getting an issue (longer than I have managed before). That said, I am still getting this pop-up box when I close uTorrent and thus the downloading is rendered useless. I really don't think it could be Macafee but I am extremely confused as to what it could actually be as I have done all of the things suggested so far and there doesn't seem like a lot else to do.Does anyone have anything else I can try/something I might have missed (might have been staring me right in the face). I appreciate all of your help!
DreadWingKnight Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 I have just completely disabled Macafee - all parts of it shutdown.McAfee is one of those "Doesn't shut down until uninstalled" internet security software packages.
UnDeadChicken Posted July 19, 2010 Author Report Posted July 19, 2010 Hmm I really don't want to have to reinstall it but meh - shouldn't be too much work. I really can't believe that it is Mcafee though - it's been in a similar state since when I got my computer and I've downloaded tonnes since then. Can anyone else see anything on that log list that might be doing something funny? Also I thought it might be interesting to note: I tried D/Ling BitTorrent to see how things went. Installed and loaded up a few torrents and hey presto, they worked like a charm. I really don't want to have to go to BitTorrent (I prefer uTorrent for a few reasons) and I have some very large near complete files that have taken AGES to D/L in uTorrent but at this stage that might be one of the most likely options.
DreadWingKnight Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 If you're running on vista or 7, running as the only user on the machine is NOT the same as running as admin.Verify the security properties on the individual files and folders where you're saving to that are giving you this error. Your user name MUST have full control to prevent this error. You haven't addressed the second part of this, which is what I think you're having as your problem.
UnDeadChicken Posted July 20, 2010 Author Report Posted July 20, 2010 Ah very sorry about that - thought I did say that I had done so earlier. I have checked the folder and I have full control. I have even created a few new folders and tried to download to them. It works for a while but then I start getting errors (so all in all, not much of a change). I really am stumped :S
paintball9 Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 I'm wondering if an indexer could be to blame. It should be giving a file in use error but maybe the application or whatever it is that is scanning the files is instead putting a locked flag as opposed to an in use flag.Nero back it up or winamp toolbar search possibly? Does mcaffee have any indexing aspect to it to cut down on required real time scans, it could also still be to blame if you havn't uninstalled it yet.
