hitwriter Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 Also, I am having to go to utorrent's website every time I want to download, and click on the download 1.4. Is that right? Or shouldn't once I have downloaded, an icon stay on my desktop or in list of programs, and I click on that. I have downloaded 4 things, and every time, I have to load program. It is strange because once I do load, it pulls up the torrent page I left off, and shows what torrents I'm seeding. it seems like it is on my desktop, but not in the list of programs, and no icon. Thanks. Any help is appreciated.
ev0| Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 no, you only have to download µtorrent once. You place it in a folder in your program files directory called 'utorrent' and keep it there.it doesn't need to install like most programs.then you just get the torrent files to get what you want, and µtorrent will open automatically.
Ultima Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 You don't need to place it in a directory called "utorrent" if you don't want to... If it's on your desktop, it'll work fine just as well.
bellicose Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 erm... funny this post... anyway, µTorrent is a very special program. It DOOS NOT need any installation. Just copy the program to any folder that u wish (i copied to My Documents folder) and run it. it's a standalone application and would not create any start menu / short cut icons. It doesn't even appear in your Add/Remove programs list. So how do you remove the program? simply delete the µTorrent program from your computer. When you run it the first time however, it will create a folder in your document and settings folder. More precisely, in your %appdata% folder. It stores all your current torrents in your list and settings in that folder. So, what should you do? i recommend that you move the µTorrent program off your desktop to somewhere else, and make your own shortcuts
ev0| Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 You don't need to place it in a directory called "utorrent" if you don't want to... If it's on your desktop, it'll work fine just as well. But it's better to, because if you just leave it on your desktop, you might delete it when you clean your desktop.Programs you use should go in the program files directory. Thats where all other programs install to by default, it's easier for new users to follow this, IMO.
Ultima Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 If newbies even know what Program Files is... O.oIMO, leaving it on the desktop is just as easy as anything. No need for shortcuts anywhere. And it really can't be that easy to delete a big green icon by mistake... Even if you put it in a folder called "utorrent" on the desktop, it'll be as easy to delete as a lone utorrent.exe on the desktop. Meh.
bellicose Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 so u left your µTorrent program on the desktop ultima?[edit] all of this is just personal preference though
Ultima Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 Yep. In all honesty, it doesn't matter where you put it. Wherever you're most comfortable with will do.
Majik Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 Ya, but if you have a multi-user environment you're going to have to download it for every user who wants to use it if they all just put it on their desktop. Stick it in the Program Files folder and add a shortcut to the Start menu. You want a shortcut on your desktop, drag-and-copy. ;p For a single user environment, it obviously doesn't matter. Either way though, it's individual preference.
splintax Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 or put it in All Users/Desktop? Personally I put in program files 'cos I don't like looking at the default icon
scottee Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Hello everybody, I'm a newbie (and read the FAQ and the beginners guide and wikipedia) I got the program send to me by mail and installed it (at the desktop) where I like my programs to be until I decide if I'm going to keep them. It worked, what a success. I tried only mp3 so far, because my flatrate is not through yet, just to see if it works or not, so I don't know about a movie yet. But what happens to my program is, that it kind of vanishes sometimes even though I didn't move it nowhere else, when I clicked on the icon (windows icon by the way that indicates usually that the .exe doesn't exist anymore at least not in its originally place) then XP wants to search for it. I had to "install" it twice again so far. Any suggestions? I have one or 2 more questions, should I post them here or start something new?ThanksScottee
dAbReAkA Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 u may have a virus deleting random exe files or something similar

You then went on to say "that it kind of vanishes sometimes even though I didn't move it nowhere else, when I clicked on the icon (windows icon by the way that indicates usually that the .exe doesn't exist anymore at least not in its originally place) then XP wants to search for it". This would suggest that you actually had a shortcut on your desktop which was pointing to the executable in another location.µTorrent doesn't have an installation program (just download and run it), but what you're describing would indicate that the executable is being deleted/moved on a reoccurring basis for whatever reason. You might want to start by checking for a virus and also your virus scanners logs. You said you received it in an e-mail, it may have been infected with a virus and gotten quarantined or something. You should always download it from the µTorrent Web site.
scottee Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Hi, I'm using a virusscanner on a regular (automatic) basis and it didn't mention anything so far. What do you mean by shortcut? I looked again at the mail. It contains the utorrent-1.4.2-beta-build-428.exe as attachment which I saved on my desktop and double clicked it and it worked. But I will do your suggested download from the website.ThanksScottee
Ghost21 Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 What do you mean you got it from a mail? A scam maybe?
1c3d0g Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Scottee: did you pay for µTorrent? If so, you've been scammed. µTorrent is a free program. Ask for your money back. :/
µtorrent-Guest Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 you should never ever(!) use software given to you by an untrustable source like an email mail!always get your software from the original site!To be shure that the piece of software you have got by mail is genuine download the same version of the .exe file from original utorrent site and compare the md5 hashsum of them.If they are differnt you might have used malicious software!what is md5?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MD5And read this Microsoft article about computersecurity!Laws 1 + 2 are important!http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/community/columns/security/essays/10imlaws.mspxEdit:the md5 hash of my utorrent-1.4.2-beta-build-428.exef4e2323b4dacbfce4120cb7520e4a00fEdit2:If you are in need of a "newbie-friendly" md5 Verifier give the nero tool a try:http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Nero_MD5_Verifier.html
scottee Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 @ghost21 : no, I got it from an acqaintance, because I asked him too many questions about azureus I guess@1c3d0g : no I didn't pay for it, it was recommended to me and I do like it better than azureus, it didn't give me no NAT-error, it didn't complain about my ports and it looks a lot like a filesharing software I used to use for mp3's and is therefore more familiar@utorrentguest : thanks for the newbie-slap (just kidding) I guess I'm drawn between careless and overcautios. I did read the recommended md5 but didn't understand a single word, sorry. I'm a woman. Does that disqualify me? (or explain a lot?) I just want to try stuff and be happy like a little child if I accomplish something. I like to understand how everything works but I don't have to. And you have to admit it's a lot of technical stuff if one really wants to know how the motor is running. Right now i'm learning by doing step by step.As I mentioned, I got the 1.4.2 beta 428. On the official website it is 433 and there is a stable version. Which one should I download? Thanks in advance
1c3d0g Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 Grab the latest Beta (Build 434 as of this writing).
scottee Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 I'm getting kind of frustrated. I downloaded the newbie-friendly-version of that nero-md5. It worked (the download). Is there something worse than a newbie? It did sound easy enough for me. Where do I find that original md5 ?! i can't find it on the nero download site nor on utorrent. I'm using firefox, but I can't see any difference in IE.
osm0sis Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 well i think this topic went way off of what hitwriter was asking. Also, I am having to go to utorrent's website every time I want to download, and click on the download 1.4. Is that right? Or shouldn't once I have downloaded, an icon stay on my desktop or in list of programs, and I click on that. I have downloaded 4 things, and every time, I have to load program. Any help is appreciated.hitwriter, what it sounds like is going on is that µTorrent is running out of your browser's cache, instead of just clicking download, i suggest you Right Click -> Save Target As.. that way things should work better for you and then you can follow what everyone else was saying about placing it in whatever folder you please. Also, instead of using 1.4 i suggest you use the newest beta.. it has a built-in feature to detect whether it's running from cache and offer to move itself out, so you wouldn't have run into this problem with the newer betas.
µtorrent-Guest Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 I'm getting kind of frustrated. I downloaded the newbie-friendly-version of that nero-md5. It worked (the download). I'm using firefox, but I can't see any difference in IE.No scottee, you will not find the checksum for µtorrent on the nero site ;-)They just have there own ones on there downloadsite for there nero installation packages.µtorrent have not the info what the md5 is.This DAU proofed nerotool just works "in the other direktion" when you don't have a given sum when you just use step 2 and get the sum in the first place. by pasting this sum of file B in step1 and do step 2 with file A you can see if they are identical. This whole hint from me was jsut intendet so you could be shure that the file you got by mail is okay. you can use the checksum i postet above to check if your mail-file is genuine.BTW: the newest version utorrent-1.4.2-beta-build-434.exe calculates the folowing on my (hopefully) virusfree system ;-)471cf0e677634ce57e5bdbbc244ffd39Oh, and by the Way sorry for my (very) bad english. I'm just a "Kraut" with a few years english in school ;-)
scottee Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 @utorrent-guestHi, of course I didn't expect to find the checksum for utorrent on the nerosite and vice verse, but since I was about to download from both sites I was assuming that I could test it with both separate sums. nero on nero and utorrent on there site. The latter was obviously not possible since they didn't provide the checksum. Means, at least I'm not blind. But since I like to try what others try to teach me ...I tried it - on recommendation - with the total commander to build .md5's on the original and on the mailed file and have them now but they don't match, most likely can't because they are different versions.I believe I did understand what u want me to do, but that won't work for the same reason, but it should work with your provided checksum. But it doesn't look like yours (because I installed 433, seufz) How did I end up with 433 yesterday when 434 was already available? grrhPS : I know u are from germany since I looked up your profile. Your english isn't bad at all. I'm from germany as well (just school english and 2 american husbands)
Firon Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 MD5 for µTorrent 1.5 (build 436) is 8AF446E33A7A7DBFE3F74516237EDC03
scottee Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 jesus, how often are there new versions ?!?! Is eversybody looking everyday AND try always the newest one?Besides I can see just 435 as of this very second, how come? (http://www.utorrent.com/download.php)
