Listen port error

As of yesterday I've been unable to download or host torrents using uTorrent. I've been using uTorrent successfully for a year and have over 100 torrents being hosted or at least available when I opened up uTorrent yesterday to acquire a few new torrents.

I did get a quick pop up asking if I wanted to update my uTorrent and I clicked yes but nothing happened that I could see.

now I've tried changing the port randomly a dozen times and it's gone from ports in the 18,000's to the 50,000's and nothing has changed when I did that. I tried updating to 2.2 beta, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I have recently uninstalled the beta version and reinstalled 2.0.3

The majority of my torrents are from a private site, but since I've been a member for over a year, I don't think that's the issue.

I noticed that my McAfee icon has changed and it appears to have updated. It kept giving me a pop up saying my computer was at risk etc and when I checked it out it was because Windows firewall was turned off. Again this was yesterday so I tried turning the firewall on, back off etc etc and no luck. I've also tried a reboot with no luck either.

Under tracker status it says 'An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by it access permission'

Since I have recently reinstalled 2.0.3 I do believe the settings are the default. I have done a search on the listen port error, but didn't see anything that would help.

I did read the suggestion to reset to the default but am not sure where to find the recommended file. When I go into C:program files/utorrent all I see is the utorrent icon and no other files.

I am running Windows XP professional and have McAffee anti-virus and Ad-Aware running as well. None of that is new save for the changes to McAffee with kept on asking me to reboot this week for some reason. I have a copy of Nod32 and am seriously considering making the switch.

HALP!!! this sux.

I uninstalled McAffee, I don't have any other firewalls save for WIndows which is turned off.

I removed uTorrent (had 2 instances on the list) and readded it to the windows firewall exception list and I added the current port number listed in uTorrent to the list as well, no luck.

any chance my ISP is somehow blocking a large range of ports? I wouldn't think so but I'm running out of options

I doubt it. I've clicked the random port option in uT at least a dozen times with no luck.

As I said it was working up until Tuesday for over a year without any issues. The only noticeable changes was the McAffee got a new icon after several updates to McAfee and continously requests to restart the computer which I ignored for a couple of days, the other thing being a prompt to install the latest update/version of uT that appeared when uT oppened after I selected a torrent to download.

Is there a way to check my ports to see if they are open? I googled to see if my ISP is known for blocking ports this is what I found on dslreports.com

Blocked ports (#11852)

25 - SMTP

80 - HTTP

135 - WinNT

137 - Netbios

138 - Netbios

139 - Netbios

161 - SNMP

162 - SNMP

445 - SMB

1080 - Proxy

p.s. thanks dreadwingknight and paintball9 for replying. I appreciate your efforts to help.

I'm really frustrated with this situation as I use torrents a lot and it'll be a bad, bad time for me if I can't get this going again.

McAfee ran yesterday before I removed it and found nothing.

I have ad-aware and malware bytes on the computer too, should I run them and see if it's some malicious software blocking my access? I didn't think it would be as I was randomly changing my ports with uT and my internet access has been fine for browsing with either IE or Firefox.

I tried OO torrent and it went red within seconds same error message.

UPnP and NAT-PMP are checked off in settings. Is there one over the other I should have checked on?

I'll try turning NAT off, shut down uT, restarted, nothing changed.

it's like something has blocked all my open ports or something.

does anyone know of way to check and see if all my randomly open ports are blocked/closed?

I'm getting in over my limited tech head here.

p.s. prior to this I was not even having speed issues as I was hitting 3Meg in dl speed when I had multiple torrents open.

here's what I got, not sure entirely what you're looking for so I'll post it all.

Also, I ran malware bytes last night, it found nothing on my computer.

I went to c:\program files\mcAfee and it appears to be just the folder and one sub folder, I deleted it. not sure how to get rid of that other thing though.

This have any firewall functions?:

O16 - DPF: {FFB3A759-98B1-446F-BDA9-909C6EB18CC7} (PCPitstop Exam) - http://utilities.pcpitstop.com/Optimize2/pcpitstop2.dll

I don't think so, it's one of those scan and fix your computer sites. I believe i removed the program with add/remove programs after I tried it back in May.

Any clue about these?:

O16 - DPF: {1663ed61-23eb-11d2-b92f-008048fdd814} (MeadCo ScriptX Advanced) - https://www.epost.ca/printing/smsx.cab

O16 - DPF: {5CB1506E-1DEA-4E63-89A7-E40E52AEA1FD} (OnagerCtrl Class) - http://fulfillment.puretracks.com/onager.cab

Punkbuster (from Call of Duty and many other 1st person shooter games):

O23 - Service: PnkBstrA - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\PnkBstrA.exe

epost.ca is Canada post's website so it should be alright. probably some java script was needed.

puretracks is some music website I've never visited, but that doesn't mean someone else hasn't on this computer, I inherited from someone else.

punkbuster has been on here for ages, I don't think it would affect uT, but I could remove it if necessary.

still stumped on what the hell is blocking me from downloading.. if I cannot find an answer by Monday, I'm borrowing a laptop from work, tossing on uTorrent and seeing if using the internet through that works.

Try that anyway...but watch out that they don't have a ridiculous 3rd party firewall.

Windows firewall will work nicely with uTorrent, but many 3rd party firewalls won't. :(

what port is vuze setup to use. Turn vuze off and try setting utorrent to use that port.

If that doesn't work try disabling uTP (bandwidth management) that's the one main difference between vuze and uTorrent. Utorrent uses UDP packets with uTP and some network hardware doesn't like to handle large volumes of UDP connections.

I'll give it a try but that wouldn't explain why it worked for a year for me and then stopped working and the only firewall I could have possibly have had on was Windows and at one point I used a router but it didn't give me any problems when I did use it.

tried the same port, nadda.

unchecked 'turn on uTP' in BitTorrent options and turned off 'apply rate limit to uTP connections' under bandwith too, shut down uT restarted, still giving a listening port error message.

did that still not working.

forgot to grab a laptop this week, will try again next week.

Azerus/Vuze is working well but I'd still love to get uT working as I like it better.

anyone thing for a second an uninstall/reinstall will work? I tried it a couple of times, but maybe a restart before reinstalling will help?
