adem0x Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 From the FAQ [ http://www.utorrent.com/faq ]6. How can I rename a torrent's folder? If you're adding a new torrent, you can rename it with the BitComet-style add torrent dialog by simply changing the save path (the folder doesn't have to exist). If the torrent already exists, stop the torrent, rename the folder to whatever you like, then in µTorrent, right click on the torrent, pick Advanced -> "Set download folder", and point it to the newly renamed folder. Then, simply start the torrent again (no need to force re-check).7. How can I rename a torrent in the main listview?Select the torrent and press F2, or single click. Pressing Esc will cancel the rename. These are useful. But, couldn't uTorrent offer to change the folder name once I renamed a torrent in the main listview (using F2).It is, after all, trivial for uTorrent to display a Yes/No dialog and (if Yes) stop that torrent and apply folder rename.
David999999 Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 If I'm thinking right, renaming a torrent or any of it's files means you won't be able to seed anymore. I tried it once. So it wouldn't be a good idea.
adem0x Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 Not being able to seed it anymore is, IMO, because you're doing it without the knowledge (so to speak) of uTorrent. If, on the other hand, you did the renaming *in* uTorrent (and, if it applied the necessary corrections that old name refers to this new name), I don't think the problem you mention would arise.
racca Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 It is, after all, trivial for uTorrent to display a Yes/No dialog and (if Yes) stop that torrent and apply folder rename.Well, I simply use hardlinks if I'm not moving the files across the drives. This way I can do whatever I want with the filenames/structures short of actually modifying the actual files without extra space penalty. And you can safely use "delete torrent and data" after you are done with seeding.
adem0x Posted September 14, 2010 Author Report Posted September 14, 2010 Well, I simply use hardlinks if I'm not moving the files across the drives. This way I can do whatever I want with the filenames/structures short of actually modifying the actual files without extra space penalty.I am not sure we're talking about the same problem. What I am talking about, uT displaying an utterly irrelevent/useless file/folder name just because the torrent maker chose it that way. Here is an example of what I am talking about:A torrent I currently downloading displays as 'VIDEO_TS' (and it is the folder name on disk too). It's been downloading for 2 days (slow torrent). At the time I knew what it was that I was downloading, so I could rename that 'VIDEO_TS' to something more meaningful. Now I can't.I will have to wait till it finishes; will also have to watch it to see what the name of that film actually is and then rename it...And, when I rename it, I will not be able to seed it back to the community.Don't you also think this could easily be solved if uT let us rename the torrent in place?

adem0x Posted September 14, 2010 Author Report Posted September 14, 2010 Why don't you just add something before it while adding your torrent? For example: C:\Download\VIDEO_TS > change it to > C:\Donwload\YOUR MOVIE CHOICE\VIDEO_TSWell.. I gladly would have. But, there are torrents that initially begin with a unique name; and then, once they start downloading, they change its name displayed in uT (or the folder they are save under). And, once it has started downloading, you're not allowed to rename its path or you get a 'not found' error. Here is another once --just by coincidence happened to me a few minutes ago:There's a torrent here:http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5830036/Bolt(_Audio_Ned__Eng__Pol_Vl_)Juultje(2Lions-Team)It appears to be going to save its contents under 'C:\Download\Bolt( Audio Ned, Eng, Pol,Vl,)Juultje(2Lions-Team)\' but in actual fact it is saved under 'C:\Download\VIDEO_TS\'It just had to happen to me: Now, the torrent whose name I can't remember that is being saved under 'C:\Download\VIDEO_TS\' simply has to share the same folder with the 'Bolt' movie..I am curious what the end result will be when all those VOB files get keep overriden by 2 distinct torrents..
racca Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 Now, the torrent whose name I can't remember that is being saved under 'C:\Download\VIDEO_TS\' simply has to share the same folder with the 'Bolt' movie..I am curious what the end result will be when all those VOB files get keep overriden by 2 distinct torrents.. Well in that case, you'll have to relocate and rehash the torrent. Hardlinking would only work if there's no chance the files would be overriden -- deleted would be OK since that wouldn't actually affect other copies. But i this specific case (since DVD files/folders are named identically), it won't work.

But i this specific case (since DVD files/folders are named identically), it won't work.'Hardlinking' isn't something you can casually do on Windows. What's more, a simple user of uT should not be forced to do OS wizardry in order to do a simple thing like renaming download path.It is a lot easier/simple for uT to take care of than the user.IOW, uT can and should do it.Here is how:if the user changes the caption (under the 'Name' column), uT should ask the user whether to reflect the change in the name of the download path.if the user selects 'yes', then uT should first stop the download, then rename the path, and then start the download again. To continue downloading, uT could easily do its internal magic necessary. I the user can't do it for uT.
