torrentspelling
Having recently completed a major virus removal, I must inquire as to any advice fellow torrenters may have to offer as to the various tweeks one can make to UTORRENT so as to make it as secure as possible. I am fairly certain the virus sailed in either via UTORRENT or via the VIRC IRC client I useThank you for any and all wisdom offered.
moogly
µT is not the culprit. You downloaded a torrent and it was infected. Just be sure where you download your torrents and report the infected torrent to the torrent indexer/tracker.Downloading cracks, keygens or pirated softwares increases the infection risk. torrentspelling
do i have to run the downloaded infected file to get the virus?my infection started while torrents were downloading and IRC was open, but i was not running any cracks, keygens etc. and i only download video files - mostly avis or rars that unzip into avis.isnt it possible for a hacker to surf in on the open port and inflict a beastie, regardless of what you download? moogly
do i have to run the downloaded infected file to get the virus?Well if you think you're infected, the 1st step is to run a scan.Kaspersky provides its AV engine with limited use to scan and eliminate viruses and malwares. Then install an AV like MSE or another free one.my infection started while torrents were downloading and IRC was open, but i was not running any cracks, keygens etc. and i only download video files - mostly avis or rars that unzip into avis.isnt it possible for a hacker to surf in on the open port and inflict a beastie, regardless of what you download?Nope, at least the hacker uses an unknown exploit in µT. And honestly I don't think that's the case here.Maybe you can post HJT log.Guide: http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=29748
DreadWingKnight
isnt it possible for a hacker to surf in on the open port and inflict a beastie, regardless of what you download?Only if the program listening on the port is vulnerable, and I'd be more inclined to believe that the virus came in from some other avenue, unless you're using an ancient version of uT.
