petronius
Utorrent version 2.0.3 freezes up with the error "Some software on your computer prevents utorrent from working properly. This is possibly caused by the following DLLs". Of course, the DLLs are not listed (putting that list in there might help the user...just saying)The amount of time I get out of utorrent before it crashes varies but it is usually about 30min-2hrs of DL/UL.I have already read this thread:http://www.utorrent.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=504548I do have an Nvidia network adapter but I did not install nvidia's NAM, nvappfilter.dll is not present on my system, and further, I have the NIC disabled because I am using a Netopia wireless adapter to connect to my 2Wire router. So that is a non-issue unless someone can prove otherwise.I had absolutely no problems whatsoever on version 1.7 but my PC crashed and a reinstall forced me into the new version. Ever since 2.0.2 I have had this problem. I am on version 2.0.3 now thinking it would fix the problem but it hasn't. It happens *every single time* and I have been unable to determine what is crashing it. I would throw a sniffer on here and watch but seasoned network people know that trying to sift through millions of torrent packets is a total nightmare and pretty much pointless. So, having exhausted all my resources on this issue, I'm posting here. petronius
Those 2 dlls are part of the Covenant Eyes internet monitoring software that I have been using for 6 years now. They are not "remnants of spyware" and have never interfered with utorrent or any other torrent client. Next.
Firon
Give it a shot. Try removing Covenant Eyes.
paintball9
Well I'm not too sure that will help much seeing as it's a broken install anyways. I'd put my money on norton being the cause.Covenant eye's is a type of logging firewall, works kind of like a local VPN running all traffic through it and choosing accordingly what gets through. As far as I've seen uTorrent does not require a steady internet connection to run, (eg disconnecting doesn't cause utorrent to crash) it's just useless. That's what would lead me to focus on Norton instead.
petronius
Covenant Eyes is not a "type of logging firewall", because it does not behave like a firewall at all. It just watches the traffic and logs it, that's it. I've disabled both CE and Norton but the problem persists, so I really think there is a bug somewhere. I have no problems with other torrent clients.

petronius
I disabled them. They are not in memory anywhere so they can't interfere with another process.
DreadWingKnight
Considering how deep norton hooks, I don't believe it to be not interfering until it is COMPLETELY uninstalled.
Firon
I hadn't actually heard of Norton causing crashes, so it's much more likely that it's Covenant Eyes.
petronius
@Dreadwingknight, understand that I have been using utorrent + NAV for 5 years now without a hitch. The *only* new development in my setup is the newer version of utorrent (as I stated earlier). I'm not going to just pin this on Norton because it is installed. @Firon, I uninstalled CE and utorrent is still crashing. I'll try another reinstall of utorrent and go from there. paintball9
Updates of utorrent usually require that NEW firewall/safe application av rules be created. The rules sometimes differentiate between individual versions of a program. Delete any exceptions you may have created for a previous version and re-create them. petronius
How can I make this clear enough? I - d o - n o t - h a v e - f i r e w a l l - s o f t w a r e - i n s t a l l e d - o n - m y - P C. lol.you.are.killing.me. I run covenant eyes which *does not* control traffic, it just records everything coming through port 80 (http). I can have it completely turned off and still run utorrent. My firewall is the same hardware firewall I've had for 6 years now and it is not blocking torrent traffic or I wouldn't even be able to start a DL/seed. I run Norton Antivirus for virus protection only. I have it completely disabled just for the sake of appeasing the Norton naysayers and I still have the crash problem. So it is something else. When I figure it out (if I bother), I will post it here.

petronius
@GTHK: Such as? BTW - I would hardly classify an application that keeps my PC from getting infected with a virus as "harmful".
GTHK
Hahaha, Nortons poor performance and detection rates plus random breakage really do you wonders.
petronius
@GTHK: Instead of just lambasting Norton, maybe you can provide me with some of these "potentially harmful hooks" that are allegedly interfering with utorrent? I'll understand if you can't.
paintball9
Updates of utorrent usually require that NEW firewall/safe application av rules be created. The rules sometimes differentiate between individual versions of a program. Delete any exceptions you may have created for a previous version and re-create them.Read that again, I specifically mentioned Safe application settings in ANTI-VIRUS eg Norton. Both are capable of doing that. And I don't believe there is any way to specify which parts of norton affect. The whole idea is that it's impossible for a program to remove them, implying you as well.
petronius
@paintball9: I'm not running Norton Systemworks or some other Norton package. I'm running an unmanaged, corporate edition client that is configured to perform antivirus only. I even have the tamper protection turned off. I guess I'll have to turn on my sniffer after all and spend a couple hours filtering.
GTHK
In the time you've wasted on this thread on problems that have been solved many times over in similarly requested manners by many members you could have used the tool in my link to test without Norton installed and determined if it was a problem or not and moved on to the next item. petronius
@GTHK - You're right, I've definitely wasted some time here. In the meantime, take a look at that link in your signature and make a note of the absence of corporate products on there. Such as the Symantec Endpoint Protection client that I have been running from the outset.

brownbear
I have the same issue with uTorrent 2.2.1 (No Covenant Eyes though). I do have Symantec AV Corporate 10.1.0.394 (2006) and have never had a problem with previous versions of uTorrent. Does the 2006 uninstall tool in your signature work on my version of Symantec? Also, what free AV software do you recommend running if this ends up being my problem? TIA.

mytinytown
I know it has been a log time since the last reply, but I wanted to add.I use Covenant Eyes Version: 4.5.1.2095 too. But, I also have the free Comcast version of Norton Business Suite Version: 6.2.1.5. I have the same DLL issue here too. I looked at incompatible software and nothing I have is on there. Not sure how to code the logs either. I am pretty good with computers, so simple instructions would be great, if a log is needed.I'll add I am using Windows XP Pro with Service pack 3.
