some auto download questions

i read the docs and scanned the forums a bit, but didn't see the answers to these questions:

when i select "Automatically download all items in published feed" it sounds like it will download the whole feed history. is that the case? is there a way to have it just download the most recent items as they become available without downloading the full history?

how does the smart episode filter work? specifically, after it downloads an episode will it intelligently increment?
