Windows 7 speed issues! need help!

Hi there,

I have a problem with my new computer (Windows 7 x64).

The short story:

I used Windows XP (old PC) worked well. I had a full speed all the time.

A week ago I bought a new computer that has Windows 7 x64 on it. I installed utorrent (the same version, same configuration that I had on my previous computer). Everything worked well until I noticed that EVERYDAY(from 4:30 pm to 2:00 am.) at the same time my download goes down to 25 Kb/sec maximum (normally it's 350 Kb/sec). Same happens with upload.

After 2 am the speed goes back to normal.

It's driving me crazy, I tried to google this problem, but unfortunately didn't find anything.

P.S. First I thought it's my ISP blocks torrent ports everyday at the same time. However, I connected old PC after 4:30(while my new PC had a slow download). OLD PC got a full speed in seconds! For the test purpose I used the same tracker and the same file. XP gets the full speed and Windows 7 only 25kB/sec.

So, I believe something blocks the torrent downloads in Windows 7.

Please help if someone faced with this problem!!!

Thanks!

1st link, last post...we need more information to compare the 2 computers.

Mainly, what firewalls/antivirus are being used, what router, what modem, what your linespeed max down and up is, and what your uTorrent settings are.

I presume you're using uTorrent v2.2.1 beta? or v3.0 alpha?

New PC:

Windows 7 Home Premium

Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 640 Processor 3.00 Ghz

RAM: 4 GB

System type: 64-bit

Old PC:

Windows XP Professional

Processor: Pentium 4, CPU 3.20Ghz

RAM: 1.5 GB

System type: 86-bit

Service Pack 3

Patched with Half-open limit fix: 1000

Utorrent 2.2 (build 23235) (OLD PC and NEW PC, both computers have the same configuration)

Connection ->

Port used for incoming connections: 16175

Enable UPnP port mapping

Enable NAT-PMP port mapping

Add Windows Firewall exception (using build in Firewall, for the test purposes turned off, still doesn't work).

Bandwidth ->

Maximum upload rate: 0 (do it at night, usually it's 30 kB/sec)

Maximum download rate: 0 (do it at night, usually it's 250 kB/sec)

Apply rate limit to uTP connections

Global maximum number of connections: 140

Maximum number of connected peers per torrent: 70

Number of uploaded slots per torrent: 4

BitTorrent ->

All the checkmarks, except Limit local peer bandwidth.

Protocol encryption: Forced + Allow incoming legacy connections.

Advanced ->

Half-open ports: 8 (OLD PC HAD 8, and the NEW PC HAD 100; I changed the value to 8 yesterday, and my speed went to 400 kB/sec) I thought I solved the problem, but today same happened after ~4:30 pm.

(not sure if you need more information from advanced tab)

Internet speed results: http://www.speedtest.net/

Ping : 29ms

Download: 3.21 Mb/sec (~380-400 kB/sec, when set in a torrent for a full speed)

Upload: 0.67 Mb/sec (~80 kB/sec, when set in a torrent for a full speed)

Router Information:

D-link DIR-615.

Nothing is blocking on the router.

Antivirus:

Microsoft security essentials (OLD PC and NEW PC).

I am already using utorrent for a couple of years and didn't have any problems, until I bought a new PC with Windows 7.

Update to my previous post!

Yesterday I changed the port number to match the old PC port (16175). That change boosted my speed. However, next day(today) my speed went down again on NEW PC.

I just changed the port number to 10426 (on NEW PC) and I have a full line again!

Just tested port # 16175 on OLD PC - still has a full speed. First I thought ISP blocked my port today, but it still works on old one.

Don't know what to do... =(((

bt.connect_speed is how many outgoing connections to attempt per second. It can be only 1 per second and still reach 1000+ per hour. It may be limited by net.max_halfopen...but ONLY for TCP! uTP doesn't have a half open limit.

Teredo/IPv6 uses UDP packets but strangely is limited by net.max_halfopen

Teredo *MAY* be present/in-use on only the Win 7 computer...but not in Win XP. (And I don't suggest enabling it in XP.) There's been problems concerning Teredo/IPv6 and even native IPv6 in general with Win 7. :(

Incoming connections from very busy torrents are as likely to swamp weak networking as high outgoing rates -- so keep that in mind if you have trouble after starting a new torrent that has >10000 seeds+peers.

Does uTorrent actually need UPnP and NAT-PMP for port forwarding?

If not, disable one or both.

Reduce global and per-torrent connection max a little, like to 100 global and 30-50 per torrent.

(At 70 per torrent, the majority get ignored and linger even if snubbed.)

While only seeding, per-torrent can be as low as 10 and not cause any problems...since you're only uploading to 4 of those 10 at once.

hmmm, that's interesting, I gave up on Windows 7 and installed Windows XP 64 bit, otherwise I would not see 4GB of RAM in 32-bit.

Everything worked fine after XP installation, but I just noticed it does the same thing again! everytime when I change the port number download speed goes up, but just for a ~20 seconds... Than, I changed the port number to 80!!!! =))))

So far, so good =)))) If it's ISP they can't block port 80, right??? if they will reduce the speed, it means that http://www.speedtest.net/ will show lower speed, am I right? Than I will call them =))) and ask why my internet speed is very slow =)))

what do you think?

Did you try Glasnost test?

Never knew about Glasnost test...

My results are:

Is your upload traffic rate limited?

Your ISP appears to rate limit your uploads.

However, some of the measurements were affected by noise, which limits Glasnost ability to detect rate limiting.

Details:

* There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests, uploads using control flows achieved up to 226 Kbps while uploads using BitTorrent achieved up to 223 Kbps.

* Your ISP appears to rate limit uploads on port 6881. In our tests, uploads on port 6881 achieved up to 673 Kbps while uploads on port 59289 achieved up to 226 Kbps.

Is your download traffic rate limited?

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your downloads.

Confusing indeed!

From what I've seen, Time-of-day throttling and "unknown traffic" throttling is very common. These are somewhat easier to implement I guess, but the "collateral damage" they can cause can render such an internet connection almost unusable for anything other than unencrypted web surfing.
