aand
*After a while* I select "Exit" and the GUI closes but the process is still there. If I try to start the program again, it says "uTorrent is still running..." so I have to kill the process in the Task Manager. This happened in 2.0.4 too.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4Scan saved at 1:28:18 PM, on 12/11/2010Platform: Windows 7 (WinNT 6.00.3504)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.7600.16671)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Program Files (x86)\HostsMan\hm.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\HostsMan\hostssrv.exeC:\Users\yoho\AppData\Local\Google\Update\1.2.183.39\GoogleCrashHandler.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\DAEMON Tools Lite\DTLite.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Ray Adams\ATI Tray Tools\atitray.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\LG Soft India\forteManager\bin\Monitor.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avgnt.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\HD Tune\HDTune.exeM:\Virtual Machines\vmware-tray.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXEC:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\notepad++.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\foobar2000\foobar2000.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Mp3tag\Mp3tag.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\uTorrent\uTorrent.exeR1 - moogly
I guess you're experiencing the MS kernel bug about IPv6 support. µT fails to exit and stays active. You have to wait for Win7 SP1.
Firon
It's a Windows 7 64-bit bug with IPv6. Not much you can really do about it except wait for SP1, where Microsoft has fixed the bug.
Switeck
Does setting net.disable_incoming_ipv6 seem to help?
Firon
Sort of... I still get the hang every so often, but it's much rarer now.
dojima
What was updated in uTorrent to cause this bug to exist? Seems to me it'd be better to remove whatever it was until Windows is widely patched, rather than having a broken program...
Switeck
"This happened in 2.0.4 too."The "uTorrent doesn't exit properly" bug exists because of a bug in Windows 7 (and possibly Vista SP 1?)...we are waiting for a fix to the underlying issue by Microsoft, which has mentioned including such a fix in Win 7 SP 1. dojima
That's fine and all, but wouldn't it be prudent to remove whatever was added until the fix is released? Having to close uTorrent via Task Manager is a little silly. And yeah, it's happening here in Vista 64 SP2.
Switeck
A theoretical workaround might be to crash the network on uTorrent exit so uTorrent could exit memory...is this what you're asking for?
dojima
Nope. I'm asking for a check box that allows you to disable whatever little piece of functionality that makes uTorrent 2.0.4 and beyond behave in this manner so that Vista/Win7 x64 users can use an otherwise functional piece of software. paintball9
Just fully disable IPv6 in windows, (There should be a link in my Sig) Disabling it in every version of uTorrent would be stupid, It would abandon anyone that wants to use IPv6. It would be like pulling the mac version because some people couldn't use it on wireless networks due to a mac bug.
dojima
That's why you make it an option. It's really not that hard. I don't get it. To use your logic, why should I have to disable Windows' implementation of IPv6 when the only issue I'm having with it is with uTorrent? Granted, I'm not a developer of any sort, but an option like net.disable_incoming_ipv6 that disables all IPv6 seems simple enough.
moogly
To use your logic, why should I have to disable Windows' implementation of IPv6 when the only issue I'm having with it is with uTorrent?Because the bug is in Windows kernel not µT.µT is deeply affected by this bug but that's not the only application in this case (Skype sometimes too). dojima
I guess I'm just not understanding why an option is not provided. It's a lot better than waiting for a service pack or messing around in the registry, especially when many other programs are completely unaffected. Is it that it's not possible? Is it a matter of not wanting to yield to Microsoft because it's supposedly their fault? I don't get it.
DreadWingKnight
Is it a matter of not wanting to yield to Microsoft because it's supposedly their fault? Not "supposedly" their fault.IS their fault. They've admitted it and a fix is forthcoming in SP1. dojima
Yeah, yeah. Back to the issue. Why no option?
Firon
There is an option to disable incoming IPv6, which is the main cause of the bug, but we found that Windows still hangs anyway sometimes (even when IPv6 is seemingly disabled system-wide). It's just not worth putting any more efforts into trying to hack around it.
Falcon4
Is it worth mentioning that I'm experiencing this same issue under Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-bit) with no IPv6? Seems to be linked to an issue with either uTorrent or my ISP bringing all BitTorrent connections to a halt... I restart uTorrent when I see my downloading torrents at something like 20 seeds/50 peers connected, and 0.4KB/s in either direction bouncing around (never goes above 1KB/s, it seems hung)... then when I close it down, it just hangs as an active process indefinitely (I've waited overnight and found it still running by accident) until I End Task it. No IPv6 on that computer.Related?edit: pardon the bump, Google brought me here and it seemed to be recent enough to warrant a bump.
Firon
For anything except Windows 7 x64 (where it is an OS bug), the unkillable process problem is because of third-party firewalls holding the process hostage. Which firewall are you using?
Falcon4
For anything except Windows 7 x64 (where it is an OS bug), the unkillable process problem is because of third-party firewalls holding the process hostage. Which firewall are you using? No firewall software at all, I never use that crap (firewall software is a total scam IMO). Pure Windows networking. The only other thing I could think of is the VirtualBox bridge filter, as both systems (my laptop running Win7 home x64 and the server running Server 2003 x86) have VirtualBox installed... if that's the culprit, could that possibly be causing those hanging issues as well, then?(Happens more often on the server than on the laptop, though both seem to hang frequently on exit)edit: WOW, I think that could very well have fixed it, removing VirtualBox from the server. It hasn't hung once in over 4 hours, still tearing along with 7 active torrents (233 torrents loaded total in uTorrent in various states) and completely maxing out my 200 down/100 up limits. I think we're onto something with this VBox thing...
Firon
Interesting... I hadn't considered VirtualBox to be the issue. I wonder if it'd make the problem more frequent on Windows 7 too.
Falcon4
Well, I had the same problem come up again, all traffic stalled and uTorrent hung when I tried to exit it (on the 32-bit Server 2003 system). I figured it was because I still have VirtualBox installed on my laptop and I was doing some cross-LAN dual-WAN downloading (D/Ling on 2 PCs from 2 connections by bridging over a common LAN connection, a fun setup), so after that finished, I closed down uT on the laptop and left the server running... seems OK so far, all connections are still active. It's a really hard to track down problem, but if it's the same symptoms as previous users have mentioned, it might not be related to IPv6 after all...
