treacle
I hope someone here can help me. I like utorrent and want to keep using it but the setup is driving me crazy! I am trying to install and configure it on my new computer with Windows 7 64-bit OS. I followed the guides word-by-word, changed settings on my router, changed IP to static, forwarded the port and yet it still says port is not open (you are still able to download) and when utorrent is active, my internet connection goes down. I even downloaded the tools from portforward.com and they aren't helping either (just says your port is not open without telling me how to solve the problem). This whole setup procedure is incredibly cumbersome. Any advice on how to proceed would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance

treacle
Thank you so much for the reply. I have seen your posts before and tried those links and as far as I can tell I have followed it to the letter. I think I'm actually getting stuck in portforwarding stage where something is clearly not taking effect. That bit is a bit murky to me and I'm not sure I understand everything that is described. I'm comfortable with the settings in utorrent itself (I think they are correct). I have a modem which connects to my router which connects to my main computer. I looked through my security settings and utorrent is allowed in windows firewall. I tried disabling the router's firewall but that didn't help either. I'm not sure if there are other firewalls that I'm not aware of (certainly nothing I installed myself). Also, I downloaded the tools available via portforward website (the free ones to set up static ip and the one that checks whether the port is open). What kind of information would you need to help me? Not sure where to find logs of things you would need to know. Can you advise?
Switeck
"I'm comfortable with the settings in utorrent itself (I think they are correct)."List them to be sure....along with the max down+up speeds of your line.If you're on ADSL or cable with phone service, there's a good chance your modem is actually a modem-router. It'll probably be listed at portforward.com if that's the case.
treacle
Okay, here are my settings: I ran a speed test at speedtest.net: Download: 11.33 Mb/sUpload: 0.83 Mb/sPing: 55 msAccording to the utorrent tests: Upload speed: 737.28 kbit/sUpload limit 90.0 kB/sConnection per torrent: 100Max active torrents: 5Upload slots: 6Connections (global): 450Max active downloads: 5Automatic Port Mapping (recommended): CheckedBandwidth test is good (green tick sign)Network (yellow, I can still download but port is not open)Enable UpnP port mapping: CheckedEnable NAT-PMP port mapping: CheckedAdd Windows Firewall exception: Checked (and double-checked via Firewall interface)Manually forwarded the selected port on router to the static IP which I had to setup as it was dynamic to begin with (followed the guides on this one). After this, the port still not open but I am able to download. In addition, browsing either slows down or stops altogether, but utorrent can still download. So, I also tried another suggestion to alter the value of the net.max_halfopen value as suggested in one of the guides and changed it to 50. No difference. Then I also tried altering the bt.transp_disposition value to 255 as suggested in a guide and again, no difference. All the other settings in utorrent menus I haven't touched, as I'm not quite sure what they do and they were not being mentioned in the guides as far as I can tell. Does this help? Please let me know if you need any other info. Thank you so much
Switeck
So you're on Opal Telecom ADSL in the UK?Definitely use 700 kbit/sec or 768 kbit/sec settings from 2nd link in my signature if that's the case. (ADSL often does poorly with lots of connections at once due to its limited upload and even acts somewhat half-duplex at worst.)"Manually forwarded the selected port on router"Then you can disable UPnP and NAT-PMP in uTorrent, as they can conflict with that.Did you configure your modem as well?"alter the value of the net.max_halfopen value as suggested in one of the guides and changed it to 50. No difference. Then I also tried altering the bt.transp_disposition value to 255 as suggested in a guide and again, no difference."You're taking those values in the wrong direction if you're having problems. 1st link in my signature...
