Freezing problem on Windows 7

Hello,

So my issue is this. uTorrent recently started freezing after running for a while on my system (program doesn't respond) and I have to shut it down with Task Manager. When this happens, my system claims my internet connection is still up and running, but I can't seem to connect to the web with other programs until I restart the system. The torrents however seem to keep downloading, as the frozen screen of uTorrent will show them all at some partway percentage, but files have managed to actually download completely.

I'm running an Acer Aspire, with windows 7 home premium. I am connecting directly to my modem through the ethernet port. I have run the speed diagnostic on uTorrent to generate recommended settings. I use Norton Internet Security which has never had trouble with uTorrent before. This problem never occured when I was using Windows XP on my old machine. Machine is 2 months old. I have scanned for malware, none. I have checked for updates on all possible related programs.

The system itself doesn't freeze, and all other programs will work correctly, just can't access the internet or get uTorrent to respond. This happens with lots of torrents running or with just one. Didn't happen at first on this machine, only started within the last couple weeks. Could a hotfix have caused this?

NIS is likely the culprit.

NIS hasn't caused me any problems before. I've been using it for a very long time together with uTorrent

Also, if it helps, the problem always occurs while the program is minimized and another program is running. The other program running varies.

And did you exclude utorrent.exe from NIS?

I'll try both of those things. I never had to add uTorrent as an exception before, as Norton has always allowed it to do it's thing naturally.

Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem. It happened again. It happened while I was watching the episodes that had already downloaded. They were uploading while I was watching them. Might this have caused the problem?

The fact in your case is µT seems to eat completely the bandwidth (that's why the other programs cannot access to internet). Maybe you can try to decrease the bandwidth settings according the max UL speed of your connection (see http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=58404).

In addition, be sure NIS is not the culprit. You should make a try with NIS completely removed (Use Norton Removal Tool http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US), just enable Win Firewall.

I don't think it's a bandwidth issue, as even after I have shut down uTorrent, my computer cannot connect to the internet until I have restarted the system.

I'll try shutting down Norton, but it has never caused issues with uTorrent before, and I've been running the two together for many years.

Yes, but you have switched from XP to Win 7, so the situation is different (and NIS can act differently).

Maybe a Win update has broken your system, check the new Win 7 SP1 released recently.

I just downloaded that today. And left my computer on while it finished up updating itself and went to work. When I got back it had finished the restart and uTorrent had come on. Because apparently the Beta I just updated to added itself in the startup files. Without any torrents running it managed to cause the same issue while I was gone. It had become unresponsive and shut my network card down somehow.

This was just from the program being open without any active torrents. So I'm guessing the problem might be in uTorrent.

After looking at some other forums online, I have noticed a few people mention very similar problems to mine, all when they upgraded to the new 2.2 version. I'm rolling back to an older version. We'll see if that fixes it.

according to the updater, I'm already using the most up-to-date drivers. Also, so far so good on the roll back. No issues whatsoever yet.

The updater in windows. Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Update Drivers. Does this sometimes fail to find new adapters? This is a pretty new computer, so I wouldn't be surprised if the drivers are all up to date.

Wait that was a dumb question, of course it sometimes fails to find drivers... it's windows.

So half the problem was fixed by the rollback. The program no longer ceases to respond. However the network adapter still somehow gets disabled requiring a restart.

PS - Don't ever use the windows 7 troubleshooter for network problems, it has twice now caused my machine to be unable to shutdown, followed by the network adapter being completely disabled and needed to be turned back on.

This might be a problem with my Network adapter, as recently I have been having trouble with some other high bandwidth usage programs losing their connections, though none of them ever stopped responding and froze due to it, and it was only occasional, not a constant like with uTorrent.

2.2 is more "agressive" that the old versions, so average network adapters may stop responding when µT is running (especially a program like µT which is a big bandwidth consumer). But in your case, I think that's the case, likely an issue with your network adapter.
