Unable to save resume file etc

Been havign the Error: Unable to save the resume file problem since changing to 2.2~

I tried the FAQ instructions

How do I fix Error: Unable to save the resume file?

Simply create two blank files named "settings.dat" and "resume.dat" (without the quotes) in the same folder utorrent.exe is saved in. Make sure Windows is not hiding the file extension when creating the file (in Explorer, Tools -> Folder Options -> View, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", hit OK)

Doing this caused the client to be unable to add any new torrents at all and still had the resume file problem.

Vista 64bit for the record.

And would there be some where to find a slightly older build to use as trying to fix this has already caused nerd rage.
