raincloud Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 I am fairly new to torrenting, and I made a mistake early on. Last November, I downloaded one or two episodes of a TV show owned by NBC Universal. I live in an apartment complex and I had stupidly downloaded it using their network. The apartment complex received a letter and they figured out it was me and I admitted to it. We have a "three strikes" policy with our ISP, and I promised never to do it again, delete the files, and be good. Maybe a month or so after that, our internet was shut down again, not because of downloading, but they said that someone had been seeding NBC Universal files. Not only did I delete the files, but I never downloaded anything or seeded anything using the network. My uTorrent client has never even been open at home since then, and even if it were, I have manually stopped uploads. From the second offense on, I kept my laptop disconnected from the internet almost at all times. I only log in really quick to check my e-mail or something, but I never stay on long. Again, uTorrent is not active, and even if it were, I canceled all the seeds. The two files have been deleted -- I didn't even watch them. I admit that I have downloaded a few other things from the public library, but not recently and NOTHING that belongs to NBC Universal (I have checked extensively). I am getting my own personal internet, but that has had a lot of other problems that are separate and irrelevant to this issue. So, here are my questions:Is it possible that they are mistaken? Could I be uploading files I deleted and wasn't seeding anyway? Is it impossible that it's me since uTorrent is off and my seeds are canceled, and there is someone else doing it? I have removed the files from my queue. The reason I am so concerned is because it appears that we have just received our third strike, and I really hope I'm not to blame when I did my best to remedy the situation after the very first time.

raincloud Posted March 31, 2011 Author Report Posted March 31, 2011 That makes me feel a little better, thank you. Unfortunately, it looks like our internet is going to get completely canceled because of all of this and people are going to blame me for it since I admitted to the first offense. It does sound like something sketchy is going on if in fact I'm the one getting the blame for it. The files are definitely not on my computer, and I have definitely not seeded anything. It could be someone else, but given the other tenants in my complex (most of them are largely unaware that the internet exists), the fingers are going to point to me.
DreadWingKnight Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Aside from referencing the "tracking the trackers" document, there's nothing you can really do.
raincloud Posted April 1, 2011 Author Report Posted April 1, 2011 I did find a file on my computer that I had downloaded and forgotten about, but again it's not owned by NBC Universal (I checked) and I wasn't seeding it. It has been on my computer for months. Do files continue seeding after you remove them? No matter what I do, the internet for my entire apartment complex is going to get shut off, and while I don't think any tenants know it's me, the management does and it might get around. Also, I live among poor people with no computers or internet knowledge, so again, everyone will blame me. I just don't want to be "The One Who Ruined It For Everyone" because of my one mistake that just never went away. Stupid NBC Universal!
DreadWingKnight Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Do files continue seeding after you remove them? No. Once the file is removed from uTorrent it won't seed.
