Checking a torrent kills my connection

I run utorrent in vmware with a bridged connection, and everything works fine, except that when utorrent does a torrent check, through force re-check or otherwise, my upload slows down to 0, so I can't use the internet at all when this happens. Note that I don't have this problem using a NAT
