Yenkaz Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 I've read about people who've been tricked into paying for uT, does anyone know the addresses of these webpages?Perhaps it would be a good idea ro make a list and try to stop/block them.
jroc Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Excellent idea. I just read about the newest person scammed....there is one thing I thought about when reading that post: did they buy uTorrent or access to the site? Scammers can be slick these days. If they charge for access to their site and just happen to have uT, Az, BitComet etc as tools to use on their site, are you paying for uT or access to their site? I came across that B4. I wanted to try some torrent client whose name I cant remember. I went to the URL and it was a site charging access to their content. Just a thought. Again, excellent idea. On 2nd thought, nevamind what I posted. A scam is a scam is a scam. Period. Especially if their site offers all freeware/links to free sites. This is why I asked the question:hxxp://www.tvcentral.org/faq.php ( may or maynot be a scam site. But is mighty suspect)In their FAQ:"I thought the software was free. Why am I being asked to pay? The software is free. You are paying for the online help and support and the online tutorials for the lifetime of the membership." Even still, online help, support and tutorials can be found free anywhere. Especially if ther are providing links to torrent sites/search engines...(again, may or maynot be a scam But MIGHTY SUSPECT)
µtorrent-Guest Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 On 2nd thought, nevamind what I posted. A scam is a scam is a scam. Period. Especially if their site offers all freeware/links to free sites.you are right with that, and i totally agree with it!But...These "clever guys" don't sell µtorrent or any other 3rd party software. because THAT would be a simple punishable Fraud. They "sell" you knowledge that they offer "exclusivly to paying members".And as long as it is not illegal to trade knowledge these Sites are doing no illegal things, unfortunately. The moral standpoint is another thing..."A scam is a scam is a scam. Period. "
jroc Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Yea that was Ebay back in the early days (maybe even today) "Auctions for info" "I CAN TELL U WHERE TO GET THIS OR THAT!!! BIDDING STARTS AS $1"(I saw folks bid $200+ for info on where to get Playstation2's when the PS2 first came out) :|or"I CAN TELL U WHERE TO GET THIS OR THAT!!! FOR ONLY $1-$5!!!"**I post too damn slow on here...lol I added that tvcentral site while uTorrent Guest was postingI remember know. The program was soulseek. (yea I know its not a Bittorrent client) Its wild that the sponsered links in Google are scam sites. (the first one says "Download Soulseek Now".) Straight up scam. I think splintax touched on that subject somewhere in the forums....
Yenkaz Posted March 27, 2006 Author Report Posted March 27, 2006 From what i can understand from some people they buy "subscriptions" to use uT(Sorta like trial programs)"I can't seem to locate any email address and I have questions about the service I am getting, before my cancellation time runs out."^From an earlier post by qismitBut i agree, even seeling the "knowledge", is still scamming the ones buying it, and people need to be warned about paying for it!Another way would be to only allow webpages that offers the software freely like Softpedia or Download.com... but i doubt that it would be possible to inforce.
Ultima Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 If you're planning on posting this list here on this site, I don't like the idea... it would only increase their rankings in Google. utorrent.com is very high up there, and I see a lot of results coming straight back from these forums when I search for some things.
jroc Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 Big TY splintax. I couldnt remember your orig post. I saw the tvcentral and soulseek scam sites on there...
new2it Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 I think I got scammed by the tvcentral.org. Let you know that the advertisement was on tvguide.com. I thought since TV guide was a respectable company, then tvcentral.org is ok.Anyway, I got uTorrent from there. No replies to my questions. Ah well. I've been suckered. Wished I knew about it.Edit: I retraced my steps. I saw this specific advertisement on "Ads by Google" advertisement panel. That's where i got directed to that tvcentral.org. It began with "www.(tv show)download.com" So, I went there. Ah well, I don't trust Ads by Google advertisment panel ever again.
Ultima Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Advertisements sometimes have nothing to do with the site they're displayed on. Take the Google advertisements up above on this website -- ludde/µTorrent is in no way associated with piracy, but there sure are a lot of advertisements for that here as well. Like others said, call your credit card company and explain to them.
Vike Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 p2pscams.info Definetly the best site to go to to make sure you aren't getting scammed.
Exec Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 If you're planning on posting this list here on this site, I don't like the idea... it would only increase their rankings in Google. utorrent.com is very high up there, and I see a lot of results coming straight back from these forums when I search for some things. They don't use the nofollow atribute?
Ultima Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 Sure, but do the links on these forums contain rel='nofollow' as part of the anchor?
damman Posted April 5, 2006 Report Posted April 5, 2006 Yes folks it happens to us all just when you think you know all the scams! Guys and Gals watch out forthis site http://www.tv.org/login.php as they promise to let you download any missed episodes of all thecurrent T.V. series for the sum of £26.99 for lifetime membership. What you get is a old version of UTorrent and a list of various other links to scam software. You know what they say: there's nothing as stupid as a old fool Yup thats me.
sunnbuzz Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 Yes I too was scammed out of $20. I am not a novice to computers or the internet- in fact I even own a small computer store. I was so annoyed when I realized that I had just paid $20 for basically another P2P program, and even more annoyed when I found out it is FREE. At first I assumed that every site built into the "utorrent program" received a percentage but I now know that is not true. So maybe someone can explain to me how another business can SELL FREEWARE ?Every time someone pays for this software, it is a missed chance for you to receive a donation…..p.s And yes, it was .http://tv.org/index.php..
µtorrent-Guest Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 "Every time someone pays for this software, it is a missed chance for you to receive a donation….."Thats (I assume!) the Reason why now the advertisement for usenext is activated in the search routine and the ads on DL page."So maybe someone can explain to me how another business can SELL FREEWARE ?"Thats "the joke" here; They do not (!) sell you the programm, they sell you a membership do get some kind of "knowledge". (Knowledge thats very widely known (See some FAQS or wikipedia for example) and not some special form of "intellectuall property" so secret that its worth to be paid for 20-30 bugs)
Firon Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 I've seen some of those scam sites, their support links don't work, and their help files are usually 404s.
Beevee Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 DownloadAnyMovie.com is a site I used following a google search. Being totally ignorant of uTorrent and what it was, my impression was that I had to buy the software before I could start. I paid $CAN56.91, more fool me.
jo Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 How do I go about getting a refund? Does anyone know?
