bkman
Hi, I'd really like for uTorrent to support flagging incomplete files with "Sparse" attribute, to save disk-space during downloading.
Firon
That would be a really nice feature, since sometimes you run out of space when the torrent starts with how it is now, even though no data has actually been written. I don't think I've seen another client that supports it yet.
bkman
Afaik, only Shareaza currently supports it atm, but also allocates the torrent into one big file. Some other BT clients actually re-arrange file data to minimize space usage, but Sparse files are simpler. vurlix
A while ago we came to the conclusion that sparse files would not be useful. They only increase disk fragmentation.

jeronantropis
bittornado has a similar thing. the file growes while you download, it doesn't take the complete 700mb on your HDD when you're just starting. i think bittornado is the only client that does this. vurlix
BitTornado (actually based on the Mainline client) put pieces in the file in the order it receives them, growing the file as needed. This method is alright, but does incur extra disk use (for re-ordering the pieces). It might be made into an option in future versions.
chaosblade
bkman: And you should go code your own client if you dont like the developer's decision.
bkman
Chaosblade: There is not need for that kind of attitude. I made no demands, and simply asked the devs (once) to reconsider.
silverfire
There's no more need for this thread anymore. ludde already added sparse file support in 1.1.6.
vurlix
... use it at your own risk. It will cause increased disk fragmentation (that's the nature of sparse files)
bkman
Thanks. I'm aware of the fragmentation issue, but sometimes conserving diskspace is more important. Besides, fragmentation is bound to occur anyway.
sethg
Thanks. I'm aware of the fragmentation issue, but sometimes conserving diskspace is more important. Besides, fragmentation is bound to occur anyway. Not all users are sophisticated and regularly defrag their disks. It would not exactly be good public relations if it later came out that long-term use of uTorrent led to systems slowing down. This isn't Linux. You won't get the chance to explain to the user that they need to regularly defrag their disks anyway. They'll just pull the app off their machine and spread the bad word.I'd put in a +1 for the KISS principle on this one. Very few people know enough to take advantage of this feature, and for the rest, it only raises unnecessary questions.
silverfire
The option to turn this feature on is tucked away in a section where there's a warning that you shouldn't modify these settings.
chaosblade
bkman: Sorry if you got the wrong idea, i wasn't trying to be rude or attack you or anything. Im just saying that generally the developers know best what to do, and as you can see they decided adding it as an option was allright.
