Trypt
I read the faqs, or the titles of the faqs, and I cannot find anything about the advanced questions. This is my first post, but I have been using uTorrent since it first came out, replacing BitComet at the time, probably over 5 years now if I'm not mistaken. I used 1.8.5 for the longest time, from the time it came out to 3.0, but....I was using uTorrent 3.0 for the last 3 months or so, but have just switched back to 2.2.1 build 25302, I believe the last non version 3 build. In any case, right after the switch, my speeds went very high again, so I'm sticking to it.But here is my question. Instead of asking one by one what the advanced options are or what they mean (most are self explanatory, some not), is there a sticky or a post or a faq on here which clearly explains exactly what each of the advanced options means and why the default is as it is.For example, I have switched a few already, those that I understand just by looking at the title, such as bt.allow_same_ip which I switched to true, and anything that has to do with ratios (I don't mind leeches, in fact I like them, it helps my ratio, so I don't want to ban people for bad ratios, so I switched send_have_to_seed to false) and so on, however, there are others such as DHT (-1 switching to 2 as some say), and bt.multiscrape, and bt.connect_speed and net.max_halfopen etc that I just cannot understand and would like to, some I have switched with recomendations from people online, but who can be trusted right? This forum is the place to be!Thank you very much.ps. If there is no such thing as a full faq/sticky that explains EACH of the advanced options, which is the proper forum to go to asking about specific advanced options (for example, the two I'm most interested in now are multiscrape and connect_speed, as well as DHT and what is the diff between -1 and 2 on that setting, which is what online communities recommend to switch the default -1 to, for some reason (always without explanation). and bt_enable_tracker.. true/false? DreadWingKnight
bt.allow_same_ip which I switched to true, Why? Having it set to false doesn't block people from connecting to multiple torrents you're running at the same time.(I don't mind leeches, in fact I like them, it helps my ratio, so I don't want to ban people for bad ratios, so I switched send_have_to_seed to false)This setting doesn't do what you think it does and should not have been changed.Basically, the advanced settings you've changed you shouldn't have changed at all. You THINK you understand some of them and changed them according to your perceived understanding of the option, however the option doesn't do what you think it does and should NOT be changed. All of these settings are documented in the user manual, however they should only be changed in VERY specific scenarios. Trypt
Could you point me in the direction of the user manual please!Send have to seed setting tells me that either for me to send them data they have to be sending as well, or for them to send me data they have to seed (or me), in any of these cases, I figure false is the way to go, but it doesn't make a difference as far as I have seen on my torrents. The other option you pointed out is multiple connections, you're right, it doesn't prevent them to connect multiple times to different torrents, but from my understanding it prevents the same IP to connect to the same torrent, and since I have loads of bandwidth, sometimes it's better for the same person to connect to the same torrent via a couple connections rather then just one. While I'm not sure if the setting does this or not, I can tell you that when I see the same IP on the same torrent, it often happens that both connections are sending/receiving, so it's a bonus. It could be that the connection is just split and if only one connection was there the speed would be doubled, thus the same, but I don't know, and like I said, I have a 50MBit connection, so no problem there.Manual?Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Any ideas on multiscrape/connect_speed/DHT/max_halfopen?PS. Any reason why 3.0 was significantly slower then 2.2.1 which I am running now. The last 4 days before the switch I was getting nowhere with 3.0 (it worked ok for the first couple months, but not great), and I switched to 2.2.1, and as soon as I did that, I maxed my speed right away on all torrents and it's been going like that ever since, for 3 days now. Settings were the same in advanced and other places.
DreadWingKnight
Could you point me in the direction of the user manual please!Press f1 in uTorrent.Send have to seed setting tells me that either for me to send them data they have to be sending as well, or for them to send me data they have to seed (or me), in any of these cases, I figure false is the way to go, but it doesn't make a difference as far as I have seen on my torrents. COMPLETELY wrong. Read up on the "Have" message at http://wiki.theory.org/BitTorrentSpecificationsometimes it's better for the same person to connect to the same torrent via a couple connections rather then just one.Except that users in the wild don't do this. They only connect from one connection, and connecting via multiple connections would actually slow them AND you down.
Trypt
Thank you for that information. I will look into it.
