Torrenting onto a solid state drive

Hi people is it true that torrenting onto a ssd consumes alot of its limited read-write cycle?

Also if i torrent onto an external hdd, will the data bypass my ssd completely (ie the data does not get saved temporarily on the ssd before being transferred)?

I have a SSD and release 3.1 of uTorrent writes to the disk many more times than 3.0 so I'm loath to upgrade from 3.0. (3.1 doesn't fix any problems I've run into. YMMV)

AFAIK (unless your system is paging like mad) uTorrent won't write lots of data to your local disk if the downloaded files directories are pointed elsewhere (at least it doesn't with my configuration.)

At least in my case changing coalesce_write_size has no effect on the number of disk writes. For me the uTorrent built in disk cache is completely non-functioning in the 3.1 series. It works as expected in 3.0. Sorry if I'm moving off of the thread's topic, but it seems relevant in that I get way too many writes to my SSD for comfort.

I have ssd's on all my computers but I also have esata and usb 2 & 3 connections - lots of speed

there is another message here by me slightly on this topic in regards to the speed.

My preference is SSD for the OS and most programs. in the case of utorrent, I install it on a usb 3 drive connected to the pc. usb 2 wasn't fast enough to make the utorrent message go away, usb 3 is fast enough.

Doing this will let utorrent save the files to the drive you choose, but it will still write to your %APPDATA% drive (probably C:\) for the resume dat file.. no biggie, windows does this too,

The SSD is faster but not necessary.

If you use the ssd and set it up similar to my usb 3 or (esata) it will probably last as long as a normal drive as long as you let it fill up then clean out, rather than download, remove..repeat...etc.

This also works well for not getting a drive all fragged.

I had 2 ssd's striped(esata) about 2 years ago, they were fine(240Gb total) till a friend damaged one. I am still using the good one. no sectors are toast yet and it's still healthy. I fill it up and clean it about every 1.5 months.

As long as you don't underpower a drive or drop a drink on it...it will most likely outlast your PC.

life expectancy of roughly 9 years...is about 1 year less than a normal HD.

Difference SSD has no moving parts and as long as the power to the drive is good, it is very difficult to damage.

I stress the power because that is actually the cause of soo many HD death's. If your drive is external, make sure the P.S. can provide what the drive needs. Many companies provide a power supply that is not rated for the max that the drive needs, only the continued running once it is on. this is bad and will toast the controller of the drive. Don't use power from a usb port, even though many drives are made to do so, Gigabyte PC's can provide over 2 amps via USB..most pc's are limited to .5amp per port

This method also makes it real nice and easy to just swap the full drive for an empty drive. I don't really burn many cd/dvd's any more either thanks to this and the cost of the technology nowadays. I just swap out the SATA or USB 3 drive with a new one, faster and cheaper.
