Torrent extension?

Hello tech savvier than myself friends,

I've always downloaded torrents from the Pirate Bay, using Google Chrome, would click on the download and it would open in uTorrent, easy. Recently when I clicked on a torrent it opened in Frostwire instead, I uninstalled Frostwire to see if torrents would re-establish with uTorrent but that didn't happen. When I click Download nothing happens, there's no download in the bottom left-hand corner with the green circle that loads up until it's ready to be opened, absolutely nothing takes place. I know I should go to Default Programs and set uTorrent up as the default program for torrent files but there is no .torrent extension for me to correct. Is there a way to add .torrent to the file type list? Or am I missing something else completely? It's like my computer doesn't think torrents exist any more...

Any help in this grave matter greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Cas

Two ways. 1. Modify your preferences for uTorrent (Preferences -> General tab) to check association at startup. Then exit uTorrent. Start uTorrent again - and it should be ok. 2. You have a torrent file on your computer. Right-click on the file. From the menu select "Open With". It will give you a list of programs to chose from. Select "Choose Default Program" - It brings up another window. If uTorrent is not among the programs listed then select browse. Go to the uTorrent directory. Select uTorrent.exe. Make sure you have "Always open with ..." checked.

I am having this exact problem and none of the suggestions worked. I have tried to set the associaiton from within uTorrent itself. If I go through Control Panel, .torrent doesn't appear on my list of extensions that I can "set associations" with. I have tried to tell Windows Vista to use uTorrent to open such files, but even though I select uTorrent.exe after browsing to the right folder, nothing happens when I click on it. It's like my computer is pretending uTorrent and torrent files don't exist. Saving to desktop used to work for older torrent files but not for magnet files. Very frustrating!

If jbebad's methods didn't work then it could be something got stuck from the Frostwire association and deletion process.

Did you unassociate the frostwire association for .torrent/magnet files before you uninstalled?

Is .torrent listed in the "Associate a file type with a specific program" section in the Default Program{control panel}?

If it is you can set Utorrent for the default program.

If it's not listed there then you may want to proceed to the next step, *but be careful not to mess around in the registry other then what is written below...

Try going into the Registry Editor, and go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and

expand that key.

Find the sub-key named ".torrent".

Right-click .torrent in the left pane, and choose Delete.

Log Off and then back On.

Double-click a .torrent file and then use "Open With" to browse to the Utorrent program

(putting a check in the box for "Always use...").
