µTorrent 3.2 stable (27568)

Found this on a private tracker site which is setting out to ban a few clients soon.

"There is also an issue with uTorrent 3.x, we're not sure which client(s) in this series will be specifically affected, but the problem is that the client is not banning those IPs sending bad data. This is not good for the user or the site. Once these clients are identified, additional 'official' announcements will be made and those client(s) will also be banned."

They're recommending version 2.2 as a solution.. Can someone comment on this issue?

I'm probably in the minority here as I guess you only make changes in responses to requests but here are my reasons (2) for going back to 3.13 that both relate to the modified dialog box:

1) Separating out the torrent folder from the torrent file name causes potential duplication of downloads where there are a large number in the directory i.e. it can no longer autocomplete, and therefore is unable to identify duplicates. What would have been really useful would have been to widen this dialog box so the full path can be seen (long torrent names mean the last part of the path was usually hidden).

2) I can no longer see how to select/unselect files - it's select all or select nothing now - where did the file list go?

You can drag the sides of the box & make them bigger until you can see the full file name. I have mine dragged out almost from the entire left & ride side of my screen so that I can always see the entire file name etc. I once thought the box showing the multi-files in a torrent was gone, but when I dragged the box vertically & made it bigger, wa-la, the box appeared. It was there all the time. Hope this is of some help.

the tracker urls become corrupted...I suspect it malformed the particular torrent files

A screenshot + the torrent file itself would be nice. I don't see the devs fixing such an issue (if there is one) without those.

I just figured out it's torrents from a particular private tracker. I've x'ed out my identifying ID number from one of the torrents and uploaded it here:

http://getoffmyinternet.mzzt.net/test.torrent

I reproduced the crash with it on build 26904 and submitted a dump using the crash handler UI. Sometimes it crashes sometimes it doesn't' date=' but you'll see the string corruption going on in the Trackers tab.

I should also mention (yeah this is probably important) I'm running the Windows 8 Community Preview x64. I don't recall if I had problems on Windows 7 x64. I might try tomorrow to see if it's an OS-specific issue. I think that may be likely since I see nothing about this issue on the private tracker's forums, so it can't be a global issue with utorrent across all system configurations.

Also the string corruption only occurs once the torrent is started. The strange error "Cannot get SSL chunk size" is shown sometimes in the tracker tab for the first update, probably because of the string corruption causing it to try and connect to a nonsense address or something along those lines.[/quote']

Hi,

Is your problem still happening with 27999?

Also, does it happen on earlier versions of windows?

Thanks,

Adam

  • 2 weeks later...

I am confused by a lot of this troubleshooting stuff because I don't know computers as deeply as most of the people posting here do, but I've been fighting to try to fix this problem for some time. Every time I'd open utorrent, it would totally and permanently freeze up and turn all white, sometimes with holes, sometimes not... sometimes it doesn't turn white but still freezes, but it always, always freezes.

Now, I don't know what I can even do to fix the problem when I can't even get into the program... I tried to go in and shut off any broken loads to see if that would help, no luck. I updated to the latest client and its still freezing when I load it up... so I'd wager the problem isn't fixed yet, and I hoped to relay that. I haven't done anything fancy to my client I don't believe, other than changing the download directory... I reinstalled the new build and it persists, so... I have no idea what else I can do. I was looking through pages and pages of posts here about it, seems like a lot of things have been tried to get this to stop happening.

Hell my browser is backed up with tabs that I should be able to close by putting the torrents into utorrent, but I can't even add things to it, cause it just freezes when I turn it on. Oh, I don't know what to do. I guess we'll have to wait and cross our fingers for the next release...

Or you could purge your settings.dat, settings.dat.old, resume.dat and resume.dat.old from %appdata%\utorrent with uTorrent not running at all.

I understand most of this. How do I get into "@appdata@/utorrent"? Is it a folder in the directory? If I purge my settings, is it going to change my download location? That's an unrelated question, but it's one thing I'll want to watch out for if I take out all the settings files, right? I'd hate for it to just suddenly start re-downloading everything in-progress to a different spot... or maybe it wouldn't do that, I don't know. xD

If you tell me where to go to delete those files though I'll do it asap!

Oh awesome! Okay, I've deleted those, plus one called resume.dat.bad which sounded... well... bad. Let's see how this goes now! I'll let you know if I have any more trouble!

Edit: Oh no!! Okay, the program works fine now!

Now I have a new problem! All my inprogress downloads are gone!! :( How do I recover them to the download list?

Oh no!! Ok, they were all in resume.dat, so you close utorrent and try to restore whatever copy you have - back (.old/.bad/.whatever...).

If not found, you re-load your .torrent files either manually, or from a auto-load directory, plus - re-check.
