A different problem with Magnetic Links

I have a MozartTX case; in it I have an ATX MB (as my main computer ,call it "A") and an ITX MB (secondary computer, call it " B") each has its own power supply etc. I use uTorrent program on the secondary "B" computer only.

In uTorrent, in "Preferences/Directories" under " Automatically Download .torrents from:" I point to a network directory on my "A" computer. So I run uTorrent on "B" and point to "A" for it to call for the torrent file(s) to download. This works fine for torrent files, as I can ( on "A" ) associate a torrent file to be saved as a FILE at my downloads directory on machine "A" which the uTorrent program reads from "B" and executes the download.( uTorrent needs to be running on "B" for it to work, of course).

But with magnet links this does not work. ( Yes I can go to my "B" computer where the uTorrent program is installed and use the magnetic link that way.) I would like to continue using my "B" computer as the download workhorse and (processor on the bundled MB isn't the best) so I can use my "A" computer to surf the web and do the rest of my work on its processor.

The magnetic link, to use it ,would seem to be only to associate it with a program to open it, (i.e. uTorrent).

Can you save a magnetic LINK as a FILE that uTorrent will pick up on ?

Is there a way to continue to have the "B" computer pick up a magnetic link as a file that was saved in a directory on a network drive on "A" ?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you both for a quick response.

I did more research after I posted this. I found a solution that works.

On the remote use computer (my computer "A" , I am using Firefox 10.0.2) open Firefox, go to: "Tools/ Add-ons" in the upper right hand search box type in "magnetic link" and search.

You will find this add-on: " BitTorrent WebUi+ 0.2.1.6" and install it and restart Firefox.

On machine with uTorrent installed (my computer "B") go to:

"Preferences/Remote" and check the box marked "Enable uTorrent Remote Access"

and type your computer name and password. Copy them down.

Then go to : " Preferences/Advanced/WebUI and check the box marked " Enable web UI"

and type in username and password. Copy them down.

Then go to : " Preferences/connection" copy down the port you use, making sure that

"Randomize port each start" is NOT selected.

Apply all settings. Still on computer with uTorrent installed, find your IP address, copy that down.

Go back to the remote machine ( my computer "A" again) in Firefox go to:

"Tools/Add-ons/ Extentions" and find " BitTorrent WebUi+ 0.2.1.6" go to

"options" and fill in the IP address , your computer name, user name, port used in the little box, use the drop down menu to choose uTorrent client, and use drop down menu to select the http:// setting.

And you good to go.

Thanks for all the help.

Ignore it unless your torrent client isn't up to date. It is just an informational message.

Update:

What I posted above still works fine.

But I should point out three things I have found out since my last post that I should point out.

1) That enabling the add-on/extension I named above, you need to have the uTorrent program

running before you start selecting magnetic links. With torrent files ( as described the way I have my

two computers hooked-up) the torrent file could be/would be saved to a file in a directory, uTorrent

did not have to be initiated first, the new torrents would load whenever you started uTorrent. (Since

you would have pointed it to save to that directory ). But with the add-on/ extension you need to have

the uTorrent program running, otherwise the whole thing will just hang and work properly. At least for

me.

2) That the add-on changes the way I was used to seeing the torrent ( and now the magnet link )

behave with the web browser "downloads" progress box. ( The box that pops up to show the

status of your down load through the web browser for each file your trying to download)

The normal box is replaced with a pop-up box (lower right of your monitor) that pops-up to tell

you you have successfully downloaded the file/link, and it then disappears. In this temporary

info box, your file that you are downloading appears as a link, if you click on this link you get

point 3 below...

3) the link opens a new tab in your internet browser which is shows you a slightly different view of

your uTorrent program as it is working realtime. ( Like uTorrent remote? )This, at first seemed like a

cool thing. Albeit that this interface doesn't have full the functionality of a uTorrent interface, it was

nice to see it on my "A" computers monitor through the web browser. ( I have dual moniters, 48"

main & 24" extended for my "A" computer . 24" is next to the bed :o) . The "B" computer is on a

VGA channel on the 48" ) The real point of all this is if you click on the pop-up box link to see

your real time uTorrent in action, you stand a chance of locking up uTorrent. I do not know if it is

a "time" limit event, that the longer you have this "clone" of uTorrent running so you can see it on

your remote machine, the greater the chance of you locking up uTorrent program. I don't know

what causes it. But If I feel the need to remotely see the uTorrent activity I will use it, but not for

a long period of time. I should rather use my remote and switch the monitors input to VGA and

see/use uTorrent program that way so as not to lock it up. If locked up , just "end process" of

uTorrent in task manager in the "applications" tab. AND go to "processes" in task manager , click on

the header tab to put the processes in order and end all instances of uTorrent. Then you can

restart uTorrent. You might have to go and check for the files/torrents that you wanted to download

to see if they are there, or you might need to initialize them.( Best thing would not to use the

remote interface !? :) )

Oh... and if you run a program to "clean" your computer of unwanted files and such, that program might wipe out the extension settings. If you wipe out these settings you get

a nag box asking you for a user name and password to download a link/torrent. You would get that pop-up because you had wiped out your password and username when you "cleaned" . Just go to the extension in your internet browser and re-type the user name and password so it matches again with what you input into the uTorrent preference settings again.

Just thought that I should finish what I started. :o)

WLS - no, it's not an informational message. It's an announcement from the website that yong80 is using. the website in question, like many other sites, have recently converted to strictly using magnet links. yong80's problem is that he/she don't understand how to use a magnet link.

yong80 - My answer for you, yong80, is that if you updated utorrent to latest version, 3.1.3., then you're right where you need to be. If you're thinking that you need to purchase utorrent Plus, relax, you don't have to do that. there is a simple solution that worked for me. It may not you work for you, but I'll tell you what I did.

Go to your start menu and click on control panel and click "network and internet". Now click on "internet options" the second-to-last tab should be "Programs" select that and click on the button that says "Set Program" A window should pop up. the option that you want should be the second one. It should say "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" Click on it and Wait for it to load. when it loads, scroll down until you find a utorrent icon that says "btkey" double-click on it and double-click on the utorrent icon in the new window that pops up. Now close out of everything. You should be set to go. When you click on a magnet link be sure to select the option to enable DTH Found in the "Advanced" option before hitting ok. If the option isn't available, then you need to enable it. You can do this by right-clicking DTH and selecting "Enable DTH" (Located on the very bottom of the utorrent client)

A simple thing to do, but it worked for me

WLS - You insulted someone before you understood the person's probelm. Which is basically another way of saying that you don't quite understand it yourself. when you say things like...

Are people really this dumb?

What you should be saying is...

"I can't help you, I'm just as dumb as you are."

Some people have a hard time downloading magnet links because for some reason, when they click on the link, it refuses to download. I also had this problem until recently.

He stated he get's this message

(Problems with magnets links are fixed by upgrading your torrent client!)
and he asked how to solve this. I thought he was wanting to stop receiving the message when he goes to that site. You don't until they remove it. Furthermore he hijacked a thread, and I don't see any question about how he uses a magnet link.

Announcement, informational message, whatever you want to call it. I'm sure some think it is checking their clients version number, and informing them they need to upgrade.

I understood that he was wanting to stop receiving the message when he goes to that site. Told him to ignore it. Does the shoe fit?

What you should be saying is...

"I can't help you, I'm just as dumb as you are.".

Been using magnet links since they were introduced by that site in 2009. Is that helpful enough?

his post was a bit vague, yes. It would have done him good to be a more specific. Maybe he thought that he would get in trouble by admitting that he uses thepiratebay. Who knows. Just don't be insulting people. It don't matter how redundant someone's post might be.

If you have ever been to thepiratebay, the message can be found under the magnet link. no doubt they have been getting alot of complaints about their conversion to the magnet links. So they left that message instead. Some people like myself don't know anything about magnet links. For whatever reason, they refuse to download. Yong80 just wanted to know what kind of upgrade hs was going to need in order for it to work.

by the way. I know full well that you are a hell-of-alot smarter then me. I was just being a smart ass.

I think i've came up with an easier solution, since saving a Magnet Link is not possible to my knowledge.

In the computer a user is using for browsing, got to have utorrent installed.

So these are the steps:

1. Install utorrent in the PC you use for browsing.

2. Associate magnet links in your web browser with utorrent.

2. When browsing and find a magnet link u r interested in, just click on it. This should open up this magnet link in the utorrent program, and start downloading.

3. Just give it 4-5 seconds to build up the file names and folders the magnet has to build, and then right click on the magnet inside the utorrent program and choose:

"Remove and Delete Data".

That will leave you with a file in your utorrent's download folder with the name of the magnet link and a .torrent extension.

4. Copy / move this file to the folder of the other computer that utorrent uses to automatically load the the files from there.

Voila !!!

I think its much easier and more flexible, plus its much more fail safe since the whole process doesn't interfere with any other programs or settings.

Friendly.
