Help with proxy setup for v.1.6.2

I have a quick question. I think. I upgraded to 1.6.2 for Mac and in network preferences set the proxy server to: "HTTP", set the address to the numerical address of "proxy.tc" and the port to the incoming TCP port. I checked both the "Use proxy for host name lookups" and the "Use proxy for peer-to-peer connections". I can download as before, but when downloading, the network utility program seems to show a direct connection whether the proxy option is selected or not. Sooo….I think I ain't doing it right.

I think I need a bit of guidance. I'm using OSX 1.6.8.

As an aside, will using a proxy server provide sufficient anonymity to keep me out of the joint? 'Cause I would not do well in prison.
