After an extensive test, we uncovered a flaw in uTorrent's caching system for writes, which can be reproduced.

To be precise, the "Disable Windows caching of disk writes" option, which is enabled by default.

Enabling this option bypasses the Windows caching system for writes.

Discussions in the forum about file corruption made us decide to do some tests.

What we did is download the files from the "Mame 0.138 Titles" torrent.

The torrent contains 6469 small files (not zipped).

First we used uTorrent v2.0.2 with default settings.

Saved the files in e.g. "d:\mame\titles" (short directory names are required for clrmamepro) and stopped the torrent when it finished.

When you scan (check only) with clrmamepro and the provided datfile, it will result in reported errors (wrong size and unneeded files).

With each test cmp reported errors with different files.

We removed all the files and then downloaded the same torrent with v.1.6.1 up to v1.7.7 with fresh settings.

Scanning the set with clrmamepro produced no errors (except the unneeded _ReadMe_.txt file)

It went wrong when testing with v1.8 build 11813, which started producing errors again.

One of the changes mentioned in the changelog of that version:

QUOTE

Other major features are bypassing the Windows system cache (see the Disk Cache settings)

The same test with v2.0.2 and "Disable Windows caching of disk writes" disabled produced no errors (except the unneeded _Readme_.txt again).

The uTorrent write cache problem can be bypassed by going to:

Options -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Disk Cache

and disable (uncheck): "Disable Windows caching of disk writes"

However, with version 3.1 and later even this bypass won't help anymore!

We will (try to) report this to uTorrent development (Status: uTorrent devs answered in this thread...).

To keep this thread readable, post clear and relevant questions/answers only please!

The more useful information we get, the better we can help to get this solved.

I'm confused though, has that now been resolved or been made a permanent problem? See quote below:

-- 2012-06-04: Version 3.3 alpha (build 27329)

- Change: remove unbuffered I/O for performance

- Fix: fix disk cache graphs

Did you intentionally disabled the Windows cache controls?

Yep' date=' it's gone. Not just disabled, but truly gone. Serves no purpose anymore.[/quote']

This problem ONLY happens because of the unbuffered I/O. We removed that functionality in the most recent 3.2 builds. Therefore, it should be fixed now.

This problem should no longer happen.

I'm sorry to say Firon, but it still happens.

I just did a test with the latest 3.2 build (27343) with out-of-the-box settings and files are still shown wrong.

As you know this can simply be reproduced by using the MAME 0.145 Titles torrent and the Torrencheck tool (or CMP if you wish), which both can be found on the PD site.

This torrent is also an excelent "Disk overloaded 100%" test due to the large amount of small files ;)

Any timeframe on when you might deem it fit for public beta?

I tend to trust you guys with the designations and alphas are a little to early in the dev cycle for me to be comfortable with.

The time frame generally for things like this is "When it's done"

There was a rushed development IMO in the 3.x branch that 3.2 and 3.3 are trying to fix up and judging from the previous post it's still got a way to go.. I'd say give it a couple of months before beta although even then there's no certainty it's not going to break something. As always back up before you try it.

As 3.2 is RC1 already it should get stable in next time. When this is done normally the alpha version of 3.3 will be at beta stage, not earlier.

To have some alphas or betas at the same time (has happened already) should be avoided :P

Did you start with brand new data, or an existing torrent?

edit: OK, it was new data. I'll report this and investigate more. It was SUPPOSED to be fixed, but I guess there's still some other cases beyond just what we knew caused it.

Dear Techies

I have used uTtorrent for years on my old tower, running XP, with great satisfaction & entertainment. Just suffered my third failed attempt to install it on my almost new laptop, running 7; hang-ups each time. very frustrating. I ran Ccleaner, Chkdsk & a complete virus scan, in case I was my fault, before trying the last time. Yeah bugs, hang-ups & no joy. I'm quitting before I get to the crash stage.

Keep at it, I know you can sort it out for us, & thank you.

I'll try again in a few days/weeks.

Love & Light

|Chris

Why can not I see a stable version changelog? (Forum closed) Why the title of this topic is old?

3.1.3 is the "final" version of the 3.1 branch; development on that branch has stopped.

The current release candidate is 3.2, which will become the next stable version.
