Internet speed

Hello everyone, I'm new here and i have a few questions.

If I have uTorrent open and downloading a file, does that mean that someone else is using my internet speed? I dont know if its clear what I mean, but every day arround the afternoon my Internet speed significantly drops to 10 kb/s and stays like that until late in the midnight.

Another thing is, since im new in this torrent bussiness and i dont know much, how does this torrent thingy works? I download something from a user thats uploading it at the same time? Do users download from me without my knowing?

hi

check with your isp about the low speed, i have 6mb but i never get that sometimes i get less than a meg! 256k if it rains. you download other peoples torrents right? yes people can down load you're torrents check on the number of seeders and leachers, that should give you an idea how many people are using your torrents. people are not down loading from your computer they are downloading the copy from pb.

worth running your virus checker just in case you have some nasties.

what does seeders and leechers mean? i never got that neither, lol

well bastianw, I see you you got the spelling right on leechers as opposed to our fellow member Scotthai:P..but seriously there are soooo many places including here that has all your answers in the right spot, sometimes alil diggin based on their search/format etc. There's lots of "sticky notes" that are usually linked to a page with definitions, rules, etc. etc.. if someone hasn't posted by the time I finish writing this I'm sure someone will lead you in the right direction with 'shortcuts'...the alternative is to research as I'm sure you have and are doing. Now that I've used up my one useless post to hopefully send a message to newcomers to the bittorrent community that helping yourself to already provided info will leave a better impression that you are 'willing' to at least grab the basics without much trouble, and therefore worthy of some helpful tips and instructions as you would be so graceful and help to show others or "lead by example" as this great community provides in us all eventually... Good luck to you sebastian..oh, and seeds are what they sound like and you put them out there for others to use as you use others seed, that is unless your a "leecher" and one who "hits and runs" without giving a little care back, and for some places you have to share back(upload or continue seeding after dl'ing for at least a 1.5 thats one and a half ratio as it would be sharing back what you take and giving a half more for good measure and quality of one's self....anyhoo I got 5 lappy's stripped and need finish their makeovers including this great application named "Utorrent"

You don't "decide"

You are either one or the other depending on how much you have of the files.

hit the stop button on your client after finished dl and your most likely a leech, let it run(seed) when it finishes and your a seeder...it hurt sayin the basics again since like 2003 or '04.. but ya man has ya 'FAQ' links and what not under ya last post, you passed em on the way in. Never said it before but "google is your friend" bing, etc.
