Try updating your HDD Controller drivers - that solved the problem for me. I was getting extremely frustrated too. I thought it might have been the recent update and I thought it might be the fact that I'm running Windows 8 Pro but I downloaded Driver Pack Solutions (http://drp.su/ - if you're going to download it, get the full 12.3 install and burn to DVD ~3GB) and updated a bunch of drivers (40 to be exact, a bunch of Motherboard drivers) but it hung on the AHCI Controller driver so I went into Device Manager and told Windows to search for a driver update - it found one and installed it. Problem solved - at least for me. :D
