Speedi
I just downloaded uTorrent and have not added any torrents. Yet I can see it uploading and downloading at very slow speeds. What the heck is this thing doing, and why is it doing it?
jbebad
Do you have DHT enabled? If so there is some traffic to support connecting to the nodes.
Speedi
DHT is enabled. Would it do this even if I had no torrents in my list?
jbebad
You know that you could disable some of the protocols in the Preferences -> BitTorrent and see what happens. I did not mention that you had to have a torrent loaded. And my understanding is the initiial login sequence and the connecting to the nodes is done as long as you have the protocol enabled. Also look at Local Peer Discovery. Disable them and test - its not hard. Try to see what happens - then you will know for sure.
Kitsoran
Yes. And best to leave them enabled.
jbebad
Yes. And best to leave them enabled.Yes. But he/she wants to understand the activity when there aren't any torrents loaded/started.
ktetch
The DHT network is (really dumbed down) a network created by clients communicated between themselves .Imagine a room full of people, that muttering between them as they talk is the kind of traffic you're seeing. it's just passing on of info between peers on the network.
