rei85
I have this huge and really frustrating problem with uTorrent when I'm downloading. The internet connection is unusable for anything else. It's impossible to browse the internet and even after I shut uTorrent down things don't get any better. Web pages won't open or if they do it takes a lot of time and a lot of F5 pushing. The only solution at the moment is to restart my computer and router.I'm using the latest version of uTorrent (3.2) with default settings, installed on Windows 7 64 bit, router NETGEAR DG834G. I have a 7 Mbit/s- - 384 Kbit/s connection.I tried other clients to make some tests and everything run smoothly and I could freely surf without problems..I have uTorrent installed also on my laptop which has Windows 7 32 bit and I don't have such problem. So I'm a bit worried it has something to do with the 64bit version of Seven.I hope to find some help here so I can stick to uTorrent. If it didn't kill my connection everytime I open it, it would be the perfect client Thanks in advance!Cheers
DreadWingKnight
What internet security software do you have installed on the machine that is misbehaving?
rei85
I have Avira Free Antivirus but I wouldn't say it's misbehaving (at least never noticed anything). In fact I have it installed on my laptop as well and it doesn't interfere with uTorrent.
DreadWingKnight
The behavior you're describing limits the source of the problem to your machine.Your internet security software, networking drivers and settings are the likely sources of the issue. rei85
Ok, so where should I start with? Any suggestion?

Mac-the-Knife
Also seem to remember something about net.max_halfopen settings being set to high. Check what yours are set at by going to Preferences and clicking Advanced and scrolling down the list, you'll come to a list beginning with net, it will be amongst them. Mine is set to 8, which I believe is the default setting.
rei85
Yeah, I already played with net.max_halfopen and bt.connect_speed, lowering them. I also set 50 maximum global number of connections but still nothing. Surfing is impossible even if I drastically limit the download speed
ciaobaby
It's impossible to browse the internet and even after I shut uTorrent down things don't get any better.Which suggests that it is probably nothing to do with UTorrent.Have you checked the free memory and running processes before and after shutting down UTorrent? (use Task Manager/Performance)If you do not start UT at all what happens? How much RAM is in the machine. What swap file settings (Virtual Memory) are you using? Nothing out of the ordinary, plenty of free ram unused. The internet connection goes just fine when I don't run uTorrent at all. As I said in my first post I even tried alternative torrent clients (much more demanding in terms of memory than uTorrent) and everything goes smoothly. I download at full speed and I can surf quite comfortably at the same time.In short, when it comes to my internet connection I never have any issue, it's just with uTorrent. ciaobaby
Ok what browser(s) have you tried and do you have any torrent toolbars that may be staying active and "looking" for an active client to hook into? And are you shutting down the client completely (File -> Exit) or closing it to the system tray?We have no chance of solving or pinning this problem down unless you provide as much pertinent information as possible. And maybe even some that doesn't seem pertinent to you Either that, or it becomes a week long guessing game. Which gets frustrating for you and pretty damned boring for everybody else. For this reason I'll try to be as much complete as I can I'm using Google Chrome and I didn't make any test with other browser (but rest assured I'll do it soon). I have no toolbar as I hate them. Of course I'm shutting down the client completely. The things I have installed on my desktop are pretty much the same on my laptop, no big difference really. The only difference is the OS which is 32bit. My laptop specs are way lower than my desktop and I have 3 GB RAM but I don't have thins kind of problems with the connection. Maybe because I'm using wifi, I really don't know.
rei85
Update:I checked the port forwarding on my Netgear and for some reason the service I added for uTorrent had as Start Port: 50096 (which is the one I set on the uTorrent preferences) and as Finish Port: 50097. Don't know why it was like that. I set 50096 as Finish Port as well and now I can browse the web while having uTorrent opened Now I will gradually try to calibrate uTorrent preferences for increasing download speed and stuff. Let's hope it was all about that stupid mistake of mine :S
