mryosho Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 I find that sometimes a download is not getting an optimal download speed, and increasing past the default of 40 peer connections will often increase the download speed - however I would rather my seeding torrents stay at the default (40).You can already specify custom UL/DL speeds on a per-torrent basis - would be nice to be able to specify a custom "max connected peers for torrent while downloading" on a specific torrent if needed. (as is set under options->prefs->torrent options)Or you may have a better idea... there might be ways to automate this, but it could get complicated estimating the target download bandwidth.
xerox6502 Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 I would second this request. Since I seed a lot of torrents, I keep my "Max number of connected peers per torrent" low ... around 12. However, when downloading from large swarms I would like to connect to a lot more peers. One solution is to have a "Max number of connected peers per torrent when seeding" and a separate "Max number of connected peers per torrent when leeching".Alternately, If in the individual "Torrent Properties" dialog (the one where you can change the trackers) there were an override for the default "Max number of connected peers per torrent", that would work as well (though less ideal).I know it sounds strange, but this is the biggest annoyence for me since switching from Azureus about a year ago.
DreadWingKnight Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Increasing the number of peers per torrent won't necessarily speed your upload up.Separate per-torrent connection limits for seeding vs downloading have been requested separately.Connecting to more peers does not always guarantee better speeds.
xerox6502 Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Increasing the number of peers per torrent won't necessarily speed your upload up.I was actually suggesting decreasing the number of peers I use for seeding (uploading).Connecting to more peers does not always guarantee better speeds. It may not "always", but with large swarms (over 100), I _usually_ find that I get far better download speeds with 40 peers instead of the 12 I use when seeding. When seeding, there seems to be little reason to connect to more than twice the number of peers as upload slots.Separate per-torrent connection limits for seeding vs downloading have been requested separately.I would support that as well.It is just that, as it stands now, with a single global peers setting, is just a little too inflexible for people who use BT heavily.P.S. uTorrent is a great app, and I do understand that avoiding bloat is part of what makes it so good.
Switeck Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I agree that fewer connections per torrent while seeding makes sense. If I only have 2-5 upload slots, what GOOD is having 40 peers connected to me at once? But while downloading, it's not unreasonable to have 40 connections (peers+seeds) for a torrent.NOTE: I feel the max number of connections in Speed Guide (CTRL+G) are actually excessive, especially for the lower-end speeds.
Fantomen Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 This is something I've also wanted to be able to do. I've been searching for a solution to this issue and have registered to add my voice to this request.Ideally you could set the number of connected peers in the properties for each individual torrent, in the same way you can set the number of upload slots and upload/download speed for each individual torrent.Pretty please?
