Speed drop after settings some files to "don't download"

For quite some time (maybe even a year) now I'm suffering from the following problem:

Whenever I download a torrent consisting of multiple files and I set some of those files to 'do not download', the speed of all my torrents drop to <50kb/s. Normally I get up to 5mb/s.

It's a really annoying and weird problem and uninstalling/reinstalling does not solve it. Changing the download priority of files causes no problems, but the moment I set even 1 of the files to 'do not download', the speed drop is imminent.

Restarting uTorrent results in normal behavior for like 1 minute (download rates normal) and then *poof* speed drop again to minimal.

Anyone has a clue what might be happening here?

Errmm?? Well ... Yes?

You are not downloading ALL the pieces so there are less pieces to request ... therefore less pieces to download - The end result being the 'tit for tat' peer arrangement becomes more unlikely because you ALSO will have less pieces to give to other peers.
