j_evenstar Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 i'm creating this topic since my utorrent has a red light.i have visited portforward.com but i don't know if my computer has a router. what i am sure of though is that i have a wifi connection using Motorola MOTOwi4 canopy. to establish this, i have a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC LAN card. i'm not sure if this is the router they say i've browsed through the routers in portforward.com and can't seem to match realtek or motorola.pardon my ignorance about this..
j_evenstar Posted May 3, 2006 Author Report Posted May 3, 2006 i only have windows firewall turned on.
Ultima Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Start > Run > cmd /k ipconfigType the Gateway IP address into your browser and see if it goes anywhere. If not, check the Motorola MOTOwi4 Canopy physically for a model number that we might be able to work with. If it's wireless, then it's probably a router.
j_evenstar Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 okay, i typed the default gateway IP but nothing happened. and since i don't know the model number of that canopy (since it's on the roof!), i called customer service. after about 3 call transfers, i arrived at the technical department and he finally told me that i don't have a router in my wifi connection. i also asked him if it was possible to establish a wifi connection without a router. he said yes and added that only a LAN card and a canopy are needed to establish it. he also said that the canopy only serves as the antenna to the nearest base station where my pc can receive signals for my internet connection. in addition, he informed me that only the contractors (the people who install the canopy) are the only ones who are aware of the canopy model number (if there are any).so does this mean i cannot portforward? thanks.
Firon Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Fixed wireless generally means you're boned and can't forward. You can ask them to do it for you, and hope they will.
j_evenstar Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 lol okay so i'd have to deal with the red light forever (and the d/u speed, if portforwarding actually improves speed).
Switeck Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Not being port-forwarded means you'll never receive an incomming connection, all firewalled sources are blocked, and over half the seeds and peers are inaccessable to you.Your download speed will likely suffer considerably on smaller torrents...and make marginal torrents impossible to complete.Yet it might reduce your upload speed none.UDP NAT transversal is in the works which can hole-punch through simple NAT. It's existed for quite some time on Gnutella clients, so it's not a pipe-dream.
j_evenstar Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 actually, my utorrent wants to upload more. i have no prob with that. as i've said, i'd just have to deal with my wifi connection.hmm Switeck i didn't get anything about that UDP NAT
Switeck Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 UDP NAT transversal is a little like a 'remote' uPnP (Universal Plug-aNd-Play) which makes routers port-forward automatically.Being firewalled won't make you upload any faster or slower as long as you connect to enough peers that AREN'T firewalled. Even connecting to 1 fast peer could allow you to upload at max speed to it...but then only that 1 peer will have any reason to upload back to you.
j_evenstar Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 utorrent doesn't have that automatic portforwarding, eh? does any bt client have that? well to at least increase my dl speed.
Ultima Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 µTorrent does have automatic port forwarding. It's called UPnP. The problem with it is that it uses the Windows implementation, and as such, it only works on Windows XP and higher, and often doesn't work because modem manufacturers choose to implement UPnP in a million different ways on their routers. ludde is working on UDP NAT traversal, and that should solve a lot of problems.
j_evenstar Posted May 6, 2006 Author Report Posted May 6, 2006 well it should have worked for me since i'm using xp and my pc neither has a modem nor a router. well i'll just update myself regarding that automatic portforwarding.
Switeck Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 You may not have a router at your place, but rest assured your ISP has a router between you and the rest of the internet. And they most likely won't let you configure it. Their router will almost certainly not accept uPnP requests, so even that won't work. You're hosed, completely hosed...you'll NEVER be able to download from another firewalled seed/peer!...Until UDP NAT-transversal is adopted by many bittorrent clients.

µtorrent-Guest Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 kwg if your system is windows, then it is already implemeted.Thats the joke about the word implemented!http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=implementedif you want ot know how to activate it. tell your router to use UPnP and check the checkbox in µTorrent for it accordingly
