FastBahn Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Hi. I've been using BitComet, but recently joined a tracker with strict ratio requirements that does not allow BitComet and recommends utorrent. So, I downloaded uTorrent, and ran the speed test and used the recommended settings. I then downloaded a torrent file that had a lot of leechers, so that I would be able to keep my ratio up. However when I started downloading the file I noticed that my download speed was huge and my upload speed was only around 1-2kb. (No other internet applications were running.) When I was running BitComet, I had no problems uploading around 40kb (utorrent recommended a setting of 35kb, which I accepted), and I checked with the tracker and it listed me as properly connectable. I decided to leave the computer and figured it would start seeding quickly enough as there were 77 peers listed. However when I came back I had already been suspended from the tracker for having a near-zero ratio. My transfer was still going with a huge download speed and still the same 1kb upload speed, and I had only uploaded 3MB, while having downloaded over 3GB.I'm wondering what happened. Are there some default settings in uTorrent that are different than the defaults in BitComet which allowed me to upload correctly in BitComet, but which limited me to near-zero upload speeds in uTorrent?UPDATE: I changed peer.lazy_bitfield to "True" and Protocol Encrytion to "Enabled" based on other posts in these forums, then restarted uTorrent, and it hasn't fixed the problem.
FastBahn Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 I do have a firewall, but as I stated, BitComet connected correctly through it. Also, I passed the connectability test uTorrent asked me to run after installing it, and the tracker with the torrent listed me as fully connectable.Since I posted the above, I posted an inquiry with the people who run the tracker and they stated they thought I had picked the wrong torrent to download and that there were too many seeders, even though there were 77 leechers. So it may just be that.
Lucifer Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 But with 3GB download while the upload is 3MB?Maybe you should try torrents from different trackers.
Ultima Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 @FastBahn: As you said, you're not going to get a lot of uploading done if the swarm is predominantly seeders by a large margin. Just in case, what firewall are you using?
FastBahn Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 Norton Internet Security. However after the posts I looked at it and remembered that I had disabled my firewall earlier in the day, before installing uTorrent. So no firewall was in effect when having the problem mentioned above.I'm inclined not to believe the "too many seeders" argument as well, given that I tried again later when there were still over 50 peers, and was not uploading over 0.1kb which is insane...
FastBahn Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 I didn't know that uninstallation was necessary -- good info to know. However that still doesn't explain to me how a default installation of BitComet, in which I didn't tweak any settings, can upload and uTorrent can't. I definitely need to take Lucifer's advice and try some other trackers. I'll do that and report back.
