Slow internet browsing using Utorrent - Suddenly...

... Or maybe slowly over a week or two.

I have an older computer, Dell P4 - 2.8GHz 1.49GB Ram running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP3. It has an 80GB harddrive (71.1 GB) and 25.0GB free.

I updated FireFox from 17.... to 23.... to see if that would help and... nope.

I download and the file and it moves it to an offline USB drive hooked to my WNDR3700-100NAS router. I have a Motorola Surfboard SB6141.

Utorrent version 2.2.0 build 23071

I have been set-up like this for awhile now and things have been fine. Even with Utorrent open, not uploading or downloading, you could surf the web with no issues. If it was downloading a files, you could still surf the web with no issues. I only get about 2.5mb down on my file a 22mb connection.

Now, not so much. With it just open, I can't do hardly anything and it takes forever to load even the front page of Yahoo and I can't click on any of the links. If I'm downloading - forget about it. I upgraded to 3.2.2 build 28500 and same issue. I then installed 2.2.1 build 25154 which is what i have now installed and the same issue. I had to close it to get to this site. I run Avira Free Antivirus Product Version 13.0.0.4045 and Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro version 1.75.0.1300. Both have Web Protection / Website blocking turned off.

I've scanned and found no Malware or Viruses or even had a hint of one except the Bunndle.b in 3.2.2.

I am at a loss here. I even update everything in Windows Updates but it only happens when Utorrent is open. It was never like this. I still get good download speeds 2.5mb whis is standard for me.

I've rebooted the computer, modem and router several times. I even cleaned out Utorrent of some of the older torrents that were just sitting there. I used Peer Guardian 2 and it started getting glitchy and I leave that turned off. It would error out, which wasn't really new, but seemed more lately - but maybe i just think so because of this.

I'll post a HiJack log just in case. If something else would help, let me know.

So you have no limiting on download and upload 'limit' set to ~10 - 12 times what would be 'sensible', it's not that suprising that browsing is 'slow' when uTorrent can use as much as it wants when it wants.

What would be a "good" setting? I assume you are referring to the GLOBAL rate limiting?

The "slowness" is also when there is no downloading or uploading happening - just open...

Thanks...

Toolbars, Toolbars and more Toolbars....

This may not be the source of your problem with utorrent but you may want to think about removing some of those Toolbars....

Yeah... I don't use them... But I did find one tied to Avira. Deleted it plus the Ask bar and the third one.

Still no luck... I can't do anything with it just open 0/0 downloading, 65/65 seeding, 1.4kB/s down and 1.0kB/s up. I click on a link like on yahoo home page and it just sits there for minutes, then loads. Holy slow...

superantispyware is also a problem child.
It's not active... Just on demand. It's also not new' date=' but I will remove it.[/quote']

They do not need to be 'active', just 'being there' is sufficient

Also You could turn off:

Apple's Bonjour service (you've probably never used it and probably never will)

Dantz retrospect. Do you have 'vital documents' that have to be backed up every minute of the day?

Diskeeper, another pointless "Speed up your computer" app.

NeroCheck does NOT need to be running.

okay... did all of the above except take out NeroCheck - couldn't find out where to disable that unless i just check the box in HiJack and remove it from there. Wasn't sure if it would hurt Nero or not. I also move Itunes libraries, music and all pics off the C: drive to an external drive. My total drive is 71.1GB and i have 39.7gb free. No faster. I even turn off Perr Guardian 2. Here is the latest HiJack log:

Side note - I could just uninstall Utorrent and reinstall it, but then i loose all my connections to my files and trackers correct?

Why Oh Why so many...Overly paranoid?.. You only need one software to take care of all viruses, rootkits, malware/spyware, etc.

Spybot Search & Destroy

SUPERAntiSpyware

We load as needed - now deleted. I use Avira Free and MalWareBytes Pro. If I don't open up Uorrent, internet is extremely smooth and fast - no delay... latency is 25ms and it acts like it. I open up Utorrent and I'll get pages that time out or it'll sit there and wait, and wait, and wait. Yahoo will load, but no luck clicking any link. Google... loads up - cannot search. Close Utorrent and FireFox, wait 20 seconds, open back up FireFox and all is quick again. I have NO download issues with Utorrent, just slowing down my regular browsing. I am beyond confused. Does it warrant a delete and reinstall of Utorrent? I have had Utorrent on this computer for 5 years - the issue is recent with no change on my end - that I am aware of. My Avira and Malware Bytes update automatically but that is it. If I close one or the other, I do not see an improvement - but you cannot really close avira, just sort of disable it. If I delete Utorrent and reinstall it, I'll have all the items in my list that will no longer be linked to the trackers and my settings will all have to be redone correct? Is there a config file that can be saved off? But that could also be the problem if the config file isn't set up right... even though it has worked fine for years. I don't know...

I turned that off in the router and I don't see where it made a huge difference.

What did happen was I completely shut down the router and modem again and let them set for about 5 minutes. Rebooted the modem, then the router. My Ext HD is connected to the router. All my torrent needed to ne rechecked to activate. Ever since the rechecking and not forced starts it seems to have smoothed back out. I also went from 65 seeding to 33 seeding.

We will wait and see...

Thanks for your time... I will update in a week or so.
