tromik Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Just got a WRT54G-CA v5 from Futureshop. Already I'm having problems. After utorrent has been running for a few minutes my Internet connection just stops, yet utorrent keeps downloading/uploading at decent speeds. At this point I can't even go into the router settings; the page just keeps timing out. I followed the guide elsewhere on this forum about setting the max number of connections to 128 etc. I know I can't install third party firmware without some pretty hardcore hacking. Should I return the router? Any suggestions for what I should look for at Futureshop/Best Buy Canada?Actually, I got the WRT54G due to problems I had with my BEFSR41v3. For example, sometimes when I would start utorrent, it would say that the network wasn't ok, so I would check the port scanner, and it would say 1720 was closed, even though the night before it had been working fine. It was if something wasn't clicking it open or something. Was this possible due to using UPnP or having the max connections rate higher than 200?Anyway, I'd still like a wireless router, if you guys can make some decent (low price?) suggestions from Futureshop, Bust Buy or Canada Computers, I'd really appreciate it.
tromik Posted May 13, 2006 Author Report Posted May 13, 2006 It shipped with 1.00.6 installed, but I "upgraded" anyway, just to be sure. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Also, I'm still having a problem with getting the ports to work when I open utorrent. Sometimes I open it and the green light comes on right away, sometimes it stays yellow for 5 or 10 minutes, or hours even. Restarting the router seems to fix it though, but I don't want to have to run into the basement every time.
kewldude607 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 My WRT54Gv5 works fine with uT, so its probably not that.I would try Ethernet connection to narrow down your problem to Wireless or Internet. Also, the green light only comes on if you have recieved incoming connections. It doesn't mean your connection is broken.Use the OpenOffice.org torrent for all of your testing.
tromik Posted May 13, 2006 Author Report Posted May 13, 2006 I'm not actually using wireless at all, anywhere on the network. The main problem:I'll start utorrent and right away my speeds suffer everywhere else. Web pages slow to a crawl. I'm fine with this as long as utorrent is doing ok, which at this point, it usually is. I'm capped at 600kB/s and I usually average around 200kB/s in utorrent, higher is the stuff I'm getting is popular of course. I'll walk away, come back, find utorrent still doing ok, but everything else is dead: IRC is disconnected, MSN is disconnected, webpages won't load; I can't even get into the router settings page. Sometimes I'll find all this and utorrent has a red light and is not downloading anything; although I don't know why this happens. Also, any time I start and close utorrent, my connections drop, I can't get into the router, and I have to reset the router to get back online.I am running 1.00.6, there are four computers on the network, all wired, and I'm the only one using p2p, although when my connection dies, the connection dies everywhere on the network.Again thanks for any help. I'm really stuck here.
Firon Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I think you just ended up with a defective router.
tromik Posted May 13, 2006 Author Report Posted May 13, 2006 Ok, I should have mentioned this first, but didn't think anything of it.When I got the WRT54G, I just switched it out for the BEFSR41, but i didn't use the power adapter it cames it, I used the one that came with the BEFSR41. Which was more powerful if I remember correctly. The power light was blicking really fast, and of course it didn't work, but when I switch the power adapters it worked ok, aside from these problems. Is it possible I did permanent damage to it?
kewldude607 Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 1st limit your global number of connections. Then the answer is that it is possible. Altho stuff working 1/2 the time doesn't sound like ti.

Firon Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 You might have possibly screwed the router. I'd suggest returning it and getting another one again.
tromik Posted May 14, 2006 Author Report Posted May 14, 2006 I'm going to exchange it for the same model tomorrow. Thanks. If I'm still having problem is there a list of recommended routers I should take a look at?
tromik Posted May 14, 2006 Author Report Posted May 14, 2006 Ok, Futureshop allows returns on opened products for full refunds, so I'm going to take the $69 WRT54G back, and then buy a $65 WRT54GL at Canada Computers. Win-win?Which 3rd party firmware is recommended, the DD-WRT or the HyperWRT?
Zatoichi Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 WRT54G & WRT54GL v5 currently is not supported by any 3rd party firmware, due to it running on a different OS. Please during exchange try to avoid v5, get any v1-v4. though mine works just fine~

Please during exchange try to avoid v5, get any v1-v4. though mine works just fine~ WRT54GL doesn't support 3rd part firmware? I thought that was the whole point of it, that it was open source? You sure you don't mean the WRT54GS?In any case does anyone have the product codes that correspond to the version for the GL? I know that CDFB = WRT54G v5.
Ultima Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 Not sure what Zatoichi's talking about, but WRT54GL is WRT54G v4 rebranded, so it does support third-party firmware. Additionally, there isn't a WRT54GL v5, the latest version is v1.1. I suspect he's talking about WRT54GS when he writes WRT54GL, but who knows...IINM, Firon uses HyperWRT Thibor, so you can try that one.
tromik Posted May 14, 2006 Author Report Posted May 14, 2006 Ok, thanks for your help everyone. I grabbed the WRT54GL and installed the latest HyperWRT Thibor on it. Right away the port forwarding problem is fixed, as soon as I start utorrent, the network status light turns green, and I check the utorrent port scan and 1720 is reported as open.I'm still having a problem with utorrent killing my bandwidth though. Even if I'm not downloading (I cap my upload at 12kB/s, which is is at consistently) my web speeds really suffer. Any ideas?
tromik Posted May 14, 2006 Author Report Posted May 14, 2006 Thanks. That helped a lot. How disabling UPnP at the router (I port forward manually) and in utorrent, would that help in anyway? Also, disabling DHT in utorrent, would that help or would it do more harm than good?
SBeaver Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 v5 is supported by latest versions of DD-WRT. the micro version fits the 2MB memory and should work fine. there are some special instructions for flashing though I think, I don't have that version myself

Ultima Posted May 14, 2006 Report Posted May 14, 2006 @tromik: Your router can handle UPnP and DHT just fine, so there's no reason to disable them.
Firon Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 The only problem with UPnP on the WRT54Gs is that it's really hit and miss (it's a hardware issue), it just plain won't work sometimes. But there's no need to turn it off, it won't make things worse. And DHT doesn't affect the router at all.
tromik Posted May 15, 2006 Author Report Posted May 15, 2006 Thanks again everyone. This thread can now be closed.
