ciaobaby
I just started the program and all the torrents were missing,So "I shut uTorrent [and the host computer] down" is the answer to the question. Therefore the cause of the problem is, that you did not allow the uTorrent downloader to close cleanly and "save state" of all the running tasks before you powered down the machine. Which resulted in a corrupt resume.dat file, that was then recreated (empty) when the client was restarted. It wasn't a trick question that you needed an alibi for.
