Changing where the files are downloaded and stored

I am operating Maverick on a MBP mid-2010 13'.

I am trying to move my uTorrent downloads to an external drive to free up space on the laptop.  I have changed the directory in the advanced settings, but it seems that the files always wind up in the original folder I had designated when I first installed uTorrent.

I would appreciate any advice on how to correct this issue, so that I can both see and download to my external drive.

TIA

Thanks for the reply

I am only talking about new download files.  I will physically move the old files after they have been seeding for a while.  I went to "preferences" then advanced, and selected the new destination to use for both downloading and completed files.  I "assumed" that this new destination would become the new default for all downloads, but everytime I load a new torrent it goes back to the original location on my internal hardrive.

I was considering just deleting the application and reloading to start over.  I would prefer not to do this, since I would lose all the seeding torrents I currently have.

Open for suggestions, I am pretty sure that it is something really simple I am overlooking, but I tried searching forums and nothing I found worked....so far.

If both the "Put Downloading files in" and "Move completed downloads to" locations are the same, you don't actually need to use the "move completed downloads to" setting enabled.

In fact, due to problems caused by having them the same, it might actually be the cause of your issue.

Well I tried that and they still are being put into the "movies" folder, which is where I originally had the downloads being placed.  It seems that no matter what I put into the preferences box, the torrents are being downloaded in the movie folder.

I must admit I am not much of a computer wiz, but this has got me scratching my head.....
