Garybrown02
I'm an AOL user and I can't connect to the internet when I enter my static IP address. I'm a beginner when it comes to networking, so I'll need some help.
µtorrent-Guest
AOL users do not have static IP adresses in nearly 100% of the cases!Problably something you confuse here.As a beginner start here:http://www.portforward.com/help/pfprogression.htm
Garybrown02
I know that AOL users don't have static IP addresses, but I want to know if I can still use AOL if I tell my computer to use one.
µtorrent-Guest
you are confusing here a static (not thru DHCP from your router optained dynamic ) IP for your PC on your LAN side with a static IP your router is getting when he connects to the AOL network.Shure can you give your PC a static one. just read thru the portforwarding progressen pages and you will be fine! kewldude607
I believe AOL proxies all communications that aren't HTTPS or directed at you. So I would go to https://en.wikipedia.org then go to the sand box and type ~~~~ and click preview. That should display your internet/public IP address. Then go into uT and copy that into the IP to report to tracker. You might have to do that everytime you restart your computer/router.Do you have AOL Dialup or AOL Broadband? Many times broadband you do have an IP address like normal.
Garybrown02
I am on AOL broadband and AOL have told me that I am not on a static IP address, and that they don't support port forwarding. I have looked on the port forwarding pages, but it's not clear what I have to do. I don't know how to open the ports.
µtorrent-Guest
There is NO need for a static IP on the WAN side of the connection. (Nearly all domestic german Internet users have dynamic IPs on their WAN side and they do torretning just fine ) And even on the LAN side a static IP is NO must, but more a help if other PCs are also on the LAN side and your maschines IP COULD change then suddenly thru DHCP and your forwardrules would then point to another maschine.http://www.portforward.com/help/pfprogression.htmPortForward.com - The port forwarding progression. Garybrown02
That only makes a little sense to me - remember I'm a complete noob at this.
µtorrent-Guest
even noobs can read, cant they?http://www.portforward.com/help/portforwarding.htmLAN is the part on your side of the box. WAN is the part on the other side.
Garybrown02
I read the whole thing and when I did the 'ipconfig /all' the subnet mask was 255.255.255.255. But when I entered it in the TCP/IP properties it just said that the IP address and subnet mask were invalid.
µtorrent-Guest
you have a 192.168.x.x IP? then the subnetmask normaly is 255.255.255.
Garybrown02
I'm having no end of problems here. I have a friend (also with AOL) who says I don't need to create a static IP address as he has opened a port and his status light is green. I have read everything on the pages about port forwarding and I have tried allsorts of other things, but nothing is working. There must be something I'm not doing or something I've missed. µtorrent-Guest
That what your friend told you is true! As i already pointed this out in #7 static IP is NO must that it will work, but it can help if you have more than one maschine on your side of the internetconnectionif you cant get it work with the help of http://www.portforward.com/help/portforwarding.htm I'm afraid you might get better help from your friend sitting live in front of your maschine with you to do the stuff.Remote help thru this forum seams not sufficent enought to deal with your Setup. So go, give your friend a call to come over.Sorry!
Garybrown02
When I followed the instructions set out in the Port Forwarding page, it told me uncheck the box 'Enable UPnP Port Mapping'. I have been trying allsorts of things to get this damn program to work properly and as a last ditch attempt I checked the 'UPnP' box and guess what??? The light is green! So it seems I have been wasting my time following the guide lines on the Port Forwarding page.I would suggest to all other uTorrent users to download the patch from http://torrentfreak.com/speed-up-bitcomet-and-%c2%b5torrent/ which allows you to connect to more IP addresses and therefore, getting better download speeds. µtorrent-Guest
the lvllordpatch does NOT allow you to connect to more IP adresses, only make more concurrent connection attemps at the same second. This value has absolutely nothing to do with the actual downloadspeed! And also more connections does not necessarily mean better download speeds because more connections also mean more contentfree"control data" bandwith.Last but not least:The settings how many connections you can made are set on CTRL+P -> torrents.
