tainted
I'm new to torrents, and heard utorrent was the best, so I got this. When I first ran it, it had a default port listed of course, and when I checked to see if it was open, the page said it wasn't. After doing some searching around, I see that I don't need to open ports if I don't have a router. I don't have one, just the regular modem Charter issues with thier service. So I don't bother with it. Now, I get a torrent going, but its only doing about 12kb/s. I do some more research about setting up utorrent, and make sure that firewall permissions are allowed. They are.The indicator light at the bottom is staying yellow, and I average about 2kb/s to 12kb/s now.I have Charter Communications cable modem, no router, and my firewall is Zone Alarm Free (if this is the problem, can someone recommend a better, free solution?) I'm at wits end, and have tried everything I can think of.Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Ultima
ZoneAlarm is the likeliest culprit. Most free solutions don't work well, so I've no idea what to recommend other than to grab a commercial one, or some hardware firewall. Also, make sure your modem isn't a modem+router combo. tainted
Should shutting down Zone Alarm allow it to communicate? Because it doesn't seem to. I'm emailing Charter right now to find out if my modem is a modem/router. One thing though, I tried putting the gateway number in my browser and it didn't go anywhere. Just a "My Websearch" page. If my modem was a router, wouldn't I have been prompted for a password?
Firon
Only an uninstall works.
tainted
I did not know this. Thanks for the help so far, gonna give this a whirl.
Ultima
Er, odd that a gateway IP address would lead to a search page... if it weren't a router, it'd lead to nothing...
tainted
Er, odd that a gateway IP address would lead to a search page... if it weren't a router, it'd lead to nothing...It lead to nothing in Firefox, in IE it went to that search page. Go figure, IE sucks. Since it didn't lead to anything in Firefox, would you say I'm not behind a router? I haven't received a reply from charter yet concerning my modem.Edit:I uninstalled Zone Alarm, and the indicater still stays yellow. My down speed actually seems less now, it hasn't gone higher than 5kb/s. I have 24 seeds right now as well. This sucks.Any ideas?Maybe my settings are wrong in utorrent? I'm on a 3mb cable connection, what should the important stuff be set too?Edit #2:Indicater just turned red. utorrent hates me
tainted
It seems my modem is an Ambit Speedstream Model 60678EU, which is not listed on portforward.com, and seems to be just a regular cable modem...Edit:Should I set uTorrent to a specific port, despite not being behind a router? The box is unchecked for randomize port number, but I don't think it's set to any specific port right now.
Ultima
It's always set to a port ;PUse the port checker (in the Speed Guide)... what error message does it give?
