Utorrent won't recognize downloaded files

Hi all,

I m having a little problem with utorrent.

Normally when you download a file and you have to stop halfway through, you can take up downloading right away where you left off. It shows the grey percentage bar of the file, like 56,4%, then you click start, it connects to peers, turns green and you're set.

My problem: I am currently downloading a very large file (almost 69 GB), and it has happened twice now that utorrent didn't recognize previously downloaded files AT ALL. No grey status/percentage bar, all white and it started downloading anew at 0,0%. That could be fixed with a forced re-check but it sucks because a re-check takes more than a full hour!!!

How can I get utorrent to "recognize" downloaded files without a re-check?

As far as I have been able to tell it makes no difference whether I plug in the HDD with utorrent already started, or start it with the HDD already running.

I run all my torrents from an old external 3,5'' IDE HDD to save my internal SSD so just getting a faster disk is not an option ... also, will the required re-check time get worse as I download more?  I am currently at 37% and that already takes an hour ....

I mean without doing a forced re-check by right-clicking on the torrent and manually choosing the menu point. All the other torrents don't require that, they take up the download right where you stopped when you press start. They also show the grey status bar when stopped.

Then let the ones that need the re-check finish the re-check and fix whatever's causing uTorrent to need to re-check them.

There is just the one very large download that has required re-checking twice, all my other, previous interrupted downloads have worked flawlessly so far. To me that would indicate it is not a problem with the HDD ...?

"Whatever is causing uTorrent to need to recheck them" - that is exactly what I came here to  learn. What COULD be the cause assuming it does not have to do with the HDD?

Oh yeah, and external hard drives make a mess in your situation because of their power save and such.

It is an old HDD that I run in a docking station, so I doubt it has any power save or other gizmos. CrystalDiskInfo says it runs flawlessly, too.

It keeps its drive letter, but I'm not sure if it was running when I started uTorrent today. I have uTorrent on auto launch everytime I boot up my laptop so maybe not.

If that makes any difference I'll switch to manual launch and make sure the HDD is running when I launch it.

I tried that today and my torrent worked fine, no forced re-check necessary. Started right where I left off yesterday. So if anybody aver encounters a similar problem he might try that.
