capleton Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 I didnt think I was an idiot when it comes to computers, ive built and repaired them, but all it took was Utorrent not to work, and now i think im the dumbest person when it comes to these things.I cant get rid of the red light for starters. Its downloading, but its hovering between 0 and 1 kb/s. I followed all the tutorials and FAQs i could find (but obviously not well enough) The only firewall i have is windows' and it has an exception for utorrent. I read some stuff about making another one, naming it utorrent too, and making an exception for that with the same port utorrent is trying, that didnt work so i deleted that entry.Anyway, i think the problem is from when i tried to make my ip address a static address. I followed the tutorial on portforward.com but when it came to getting my ip address from the "run" or "cmd" window, my computer says that my IP address is 10.0.0.13 not only is that drastically different form the website's tutorial, my computer also says "yes" for DHCP enabled and Autoconfiguration. What is DHCP? should i turn it off? how do i do that?Anyway, my router is a VisionNet 200-ES. Someone please help, ive been trying to get this to work for the past two days. probably been on it for four hours straight right now. I have come very close to tossing my machine out the window. Someone please help!OH, i just remembered, i am running XP 64bit edition... could that be the cause of all these problems?
Ultima Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 The tutorial isn't meant to be followed entirely literally. Internal IP addresses can vary. Mine is 172.16.x.x, some other people have 192.1.x.x, others have 10.x.x.x. Just use the IP address you get from ipconfig. As for DHCP, yes, disable it. IINM, it's basically the automatic thing in the TCP/IP properties dialog. Enter the stuff manually instead.Just follow everything from here... it's straight-forward enough. And make sure you followed everything carefully. If you do that and still have a problem, tell us what firewall you're using.
capleton Posted May 31, 2006 Author Report Posted May 31, 2006 ok, almost got through it all. when i tried to enter 10.0.0.13 into the address bar, i get a page cannot be displayed message. The only time i can get it to work is when i use the ip address that portforward says i have when i sign on. What i seem to find strange, is that ipconfig in the cmd prompt gives me the 10.0.0.13 as an ip address still. I was able to get rid of DHCP though. What am i not getting here?
Ultima Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 When you type the IP into your browser, you type the Gateway IP address (next to Default Gateway), not your computer's.
capleton Posted May 31, 2006 Author Report Posted May 31, 2006 Ok. Thanks for the help. It is no longer red. I dont know how i missed some of those things. Now its yellow though, and only getting 1.5kb/s. is this the subject matter for a different board?
Ultima Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 Nah, keep it in one thread ;PUm, test a different torrent, like OpenOffice.org v2.0.2 w/ JRE.
Switeck Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 Your router may be choking on DHT traffic, thus causing the slow speeds.Try disabling DHT in µTorrent and not port-forwarding UDP packets to see if that helps.Viruses and keylogger trojans can also cause firewalled conditions and massive slowdowns. Just something to consider looking for manually (using Process Viewer/Tcp View/HijackThis) if you haven't already.
capleton Posted May 31, 2006 Author Report Posted May 31, 2006 alright, thanks for all the help. ive tweaked it a bit and im getting between 17 and 120 kB/s, pretty good. its all over the place, but i guess that is just my network, and the torrents. But, ive tried getting a couple torrents, and towards the end, they start going backwards: it will be at 99.8% then after about two minutes, it can go down all the way to 98.7%. Is that normal? Im pretty sure i didnt eat any smelly mushrooms today.
Firon Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 They drop because some pieces are failing the hash check, I guess. It dumps those pieces and tries again. If the torrent never finishes...http://utorrent.com/faq.php#I_get_tons_of_hashfails_on_my_torrents_and_the_torrent_never_finishesAlso, did you run the speed test and choose your upload from the speed guide?
capleton Posted May 31, 2006 Author Report Posted May 31, 2006 im at 327 kbps download and 313 kbps upload. I did the speed check with that info.how do i disable DMZ? is it on the explorer page of my router?
Ultima Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 So select xx/384k. And yeah, if your router has the DMZ thing, it should be in the configuration page.
Firon Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 Lower the upload cap to 31 in Network after choosing xx/384kbit from the Speed Guide.
